There is a woman in the Washington D.C. area who has an entire blog that revolves around sports in the D.C. area. Her name is Liz and her blog is aptly named DCSportsChick.
I also live in the D.C. Metro area and blog about sports, so you can imagine how excited I was to find this site. I contacted Liz and she was wonderful enough to let me interview her.
Here is what Liz shared with me:
Sarah: What prompted you to begin a blog all about DC sports?
Liz: I've been living in the DC area for 12 years (which, for this transient town, is an eternity!) so I've adopted most of the sports teams here as my own. I grew up watching a lot of football and baseball because of my dad, but didn't adopt any baseball allegiances until the Nationals came to town. I was frustrated one night after a Nationals game and my husband was tired of hearing me vent, so I figured a blog would be a good outlet.
Sarah: How long have you been blogging?
Liz: Just over a year- I started in July 2005.
Sarah: How do the men in the sports blogging community react you? Do they treat you like and equal?
Liz: For the most part, yes. The male sports bloggers I've encountered online and in person have been very welcoming and professional. Several of them have asked me for suggestions and advice on various topics relating to their blogs. Of course, male visitors to my blog are another story; I get the occasional email asking for a date or a nastygram asserting that I don't know what I'm talking about, but I'm sure the male bloggers get those too. ;-)
Sarah: I notice you mention that you cover The Nationals, The Wizards, The Caps, DC United and GW Sports. Why not The Redskins? Do you cover any women's sports?
Liz: Actually, I'm not a big fan of the Redskins. Because I'm such a fan of the other sports in DC, it irritates me that the Redskins get so much media attention 365 days of the year, especially if they're lousy. I shouldn't be able to turn on the TV in March and hear something about the Redskins as the lead sports story on the local news. And there are enough blogs who give lots of Redskins love; there's plenty of room for dissenters. Not to mention that I'm an Eagles fan.
As for women's sports, I admittedly don't see enough of them. I used to go to some Washington Freedom games when they were playing, but I've never been to a Mystics game, something I hope to change next season. GW women's basketball games were always much better than the guys' games; as a GW grad, I try to get to at least one of each a season. I'm also intrigued by the world's tallest twins on the American University women's volleyball team.
Sarah: Where else do you blog (if at all)?
Liz: I do a group blog over at Nats Chat Blog, and I write the occasional article for FemmeFan.com. I may also be joining a major D.C. blog, covering the Capitals (details to come soon). It's all a matter of finding time, since I travel a lot for work and usually have limited access to the internet.
Thanks Liz!
