Need a Break? Take a Mental Health Day!

When I was little, my mom would sometimes surprise me with a "mental health day," allowing me to miss school to spend the day together doing something fun. Those days made for my fondest memories of childhood. I've carried through my mom's wise tradition and know when I need to take a break and just what to do. Who else enjoys taking a healthy break now and again?

conjectures of a guilty bystander actually emailed her boss with the news that she was taking a mental health day. Kudos!

The Mind of a Crazy Woman hit the beach.

pigeonroofknits recognized the signs of an impending mental health day immediately: "It was one of those days where I went to work, stared at the computer, looked up a book (I work for an antique book dealer; we mostly sell online), began to describe it, then gave up and went grocery shopping."

And just in case you're in need, Bellydancer Wannabe has a compendium of excuses to give your higher-up.

I wish my Mom had given me menatal health days during High School. Then again, high school was such a horrid experience for me, it's a wonder I rarely skipped out. I was rather a geeky-art kid and the one cool thing my Mom did do for me was allow me to stay home and be sad when Andy Warhol died. He was one of my favourite artits. I was able to stay home and paint.

More employers should put an emphasis on floating holidays. They'd probably get more out of their employees. Maybe people should start organizing Mental Health Brunches?

I have always given my children (now 23, almost 15 and almost 17) "mental health days" and taken them myself. It is a little more difficult now that they are in HS because they miss so much in one day. I now give them the choice of taking one as they need it (and keeping careful track of them)or using one for a "period day". A period day is just what it sounds like; a day your period is so bad, or so tiring, or just so annoying that you need to lounge in your pajamas on the couch watching movies, drinking tea and eating raw cookie dough.

What are sick days for, if not mental health days? A healthy mind is a healthy heart.

I have always given my kids mental health days off from school. My son, he rarely wanted a mental health day which was weird because he is the one who struggled most with school.

I took a mental health day on Monday, and I'm taking another on Friday. I'm considering taking several more over the next few months. My mental is in need of some health.
