The price we pay for beauty and trends: How far will you go?

An interesting topic showed up in one of my beauty discussion groups the other day about a discontinued Chanel nail polish that normally retailed for $18, actually went for $80 on Ebay.Nail polish! Now most of us here probably think this is ridiculous, but for some, it's a necessity and the price they will pay to follow celebrity trends.

So how far would you go? What's your beauty weakness? How much time would you spend standing in line for early bird sales?

In the past, I couldn't have put a finger on any one thing. From trendy haircuts to glamorous nails and the coolest clothes, all of it was necessary for me. I was a full on freaky diva with unlimited credit in hand. Today, I'm still a diva, but since I'm still paying off those credit cards from careless spending and those hundreds of skirts that I just had to have, well, my divaness isn't quite what it used to be.

I came up with a small list of my favorites and must-haves that will work for any season of the year and for years to follow. Being the now frugal diva that I am, if I'm going to spend a decent amount of money, it's got to last for seasons to come! It must be versatile for dressing up and dressing down as well.

1) The Little Black Dress. Nothing fancy about it! The best thing about the dresses on this page is that you can dress it up with pearls and heels or take it down a notch with boots and a scarf. And at the price listed, it won't break your wallet for a style that really won't die!

2) Comfy Mary Janes and boots!! Everyone knows it's hard to find comfort and stylish at a decent price. Being the lazy diva that I am, I refuse to put on a pair of tennies with my dress when I make my way to and from the BART station. Both selections can be paired with a cute skirt or a great pair of jeans!

3) The Big Bag! I can't go anywhere without bringing half my house with me. Anything that will carry a book, my water, a notebook, cellphones, skin care samples, hand cream and lipstick is worth a pretty penny! This particular bag will go with anything and could probably fit take out for 2 in it! Not sure what to look for in a bag? Then I recommend checking out The Bag Snob for fabulous advice and tips on what to buy!

4) The Miracle Podbelt Whether I'm taking a walk or heading out for a night of dancing, this belt has been my saving grace! And quite honestly, they look mighty cool when worn with jeans and casual skirts! You'll never lose your keys, camera, lighter, lipstick or wallet. Detachable compartments are available and my most favorite is the lip balm attachment! This belt is worth every penny and you won't leave home without it on your casual adventures!

5) Trendy Haircuts! If there's any celebrity that I've seen with consistenly fabulous hair styles, it's Meg Ryan. Finding a great hairstylist isn't cheap, but when you do find one, it's well worth the price. They must have a great knowledge of color and how to frame your face perfectly, but also listen to your needs. I always check out reviews or better yet, find celebrity favorites!

6) Lipstick! Dear God, each day I pray that you'll find me a lipstick to magically plump my lips with the right shade of red without causing them to dry and crack and without making me look like a total hussy. That's right, I'd pay a decent amount of money for lipstick because ingredients are important. After all, we do lick our lips. I don't want to find out I've been licking something with the chemical name of bird crap! So far, I'm in love with Hourglass Cosmetics Lipstick. My favorite color is Cherish. I don't wear much makeup, but when I do, I always dress up the lips!

7) The perfect jeans! If you find the perfect jeans, you'll never have to ask, "Does my ass look to big?" I'm a shorty which means finding jeans is a pain! Looking for great denim recommendations?

I myself spend a sickening amount of cash on a single hairstyling appointment. As with Jenna above, I have stuck with the same, classic hairstyle for years (although I did add some sweeping bangs a couple years ago, haven't become sick of them yet!) but use colour to have fun with my hair. I have very thick hair, which I love EXCEPT when I have to pay the bill for highlights: my hair takes about twice as much colour as the average gal's hair, and they charge me accordingly. So I only go to the hair salon two or three times a year, but when I do, I go all out!

Other indulgences: cute shoes (I limit myself to one new pair per season) and eye makeup. I like to do smoky/trendy/glam eyes and keep the rest of my face very neutral for makeup.

The one recent beauty splurge, which was quite out of character for me, was to purchase a pedicure kit for myself when I was shopping for a friend's birthday present last week.

I go for the classic haircut, myself. Trendy goes out of style too quickly and, often times, is too hard to manage the upkeep of with a life, child, career, etc. However, I do bump around with color fun, though, again, since I'm spend-thrifty, I do it myself.

I don't think I'm very trendy. ;)

That said, I just found that my little black dress, a splurge from my college days, fits again. My splurge? Membership to a good gym. ;)
