National Adoption Month

Last week, I talked to Scout and Jem’s former foster mom. Right now, they’re fostering eight kids, including a sibling group of four. (They’ve fostered over 120 kids so far!) That sibling group recently met their soon-to-be adoptive parents, so their foster mom was asking me how she could help prepare the new parents ....more

“Laura stood up on the board and Pa held her safe by the arm, so she could see the town. When she saw it, she could hardly breathe. She knew how Yankee Doodle felt, when he could not see the town because there were so many houses.” – from Little House in the Big Woods Wilmington is a fun town with a neat vibe ....more

“It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanation from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.” ~Robert Louis Stevenson Last weekend, Kathryn and I explored the cutest little town, with the most fantastic old trees. I don’t know how to explain how delightful I found it all, except that it felt like I’d wandered into a really good book. I don’t know if I’ll ever write more than just a blog, but I feel as though the likelihood increased by 3000% simply by living here ....more

10 things different about island life

Less than two weeks ago, we moved from a metropolitan, highly populated area to a small coastal town. It’s a little bit like a perpetual vacation, except Ken has a job and we have to actually do things like house-cleaning and schoolwork. It’s awesome, but it’s a lot to get used to! ...more

“Where thou art, that is home.” – Emily Dickinson We made here safe and sound, and I’m slowly emerging from ALL the boxes! More happy: the slipper socks I found at Walmart to keep my feet cushioned and cozy on the tile floors throughout the house. from around the web: Maybe we should stop coddling our kids so much :: “There’s nothing wrong with serving our families–it’s a calling and an honor ....more

Our new house: a sneak peek!

I’ve talked about moving, and even written a good-bye ode to our house, so now it’s time to share a peek at our new little cottage near the sea! By bicycle, it’s less than a mile to the beach. {squee!} We’re downsizing ....more

“Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.” -George Eliot Yesterday, I had a bad day. I’ve been stressing about all the things that have to be done by all our deadlines to make this move happen, and I ended up yelling at the kids and text-venting at my husband. So I had a little cry, and took a tea break with my most non-judgmental friend to regroup ....more

Goodbye, House

Moving stinks, y’all. I’m nowhere near finished packing, and haven’t even started going through the garage. I’ve been selling all sorts of furniture online (one thing I do love about facebook: yard sale groups!), and I plan to have an everything-must-go moving sale here this weekend for all the small stuff ....more

“If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.” -Seth Godin One word: packing. That’s what my life consists of right now. Nothing witty to say about it, but I think moving falls into the category of things — like childbirth — that are subject to selective amnesia ....more

“Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.” –Ann Landers It’s been a year since we brought Piper home. She’s still a spastic spider monkey sometimes but it’s hard to imagine I ever thought of sending her back to the rescue during our trial week. I’m so glad I stuck it out, because she’s become my little furry sidekick ....more
