Women's Space/The Margins discovers that Alas, a blog "features a page of reviews of hardcore pornography websites", and comments, "had I known this, I never would have continued posting to Alas." See her two posts on this issue, "Pimped: Alas, A Blog Reviews Hardcore Pornography Websites—Did Everybody But Me Already Know This?" and "The Revolution Will Be Commodified?—Alternatives to Selling Feminist Websites and Blogs to the Man".
Meanwhile, over at Alas, longtime reader Jimmy Ho raises this issue through the comment facility in an unrelated post:
" … You know, when I said that by using the expression 'link-whoring', you were making yourself a 'blog pimp', I didn't think you would ever prove me right.
"As someone who started reading you before you named your blog Alas, as one of those who started identifying as pro-/feminists under your influence, I feel betrayed: you sold out to our worst enemies.
"Heart says whatever needs to be said here. There is no excuse for what you did.
"Disappointed doesn't begin to cover it: why should feminist women trust any pro-feminist man when you the well-known 'male feminist blogger' behave that way?
"Alas, a blog is dead to me." (This is an excerpt; click through to read the entire comment).
Barry Deutsch, who writes under the name "Ampersand" at Alas, a blog, responds:
"I don't think I'll be responding to Jimmy Ho, except to point out this past post of mine."
It's worth noting that the comments are closed to the post he points to, so discussions about this announcement, originally made September 13 of this year, are taking place elsewhere.
For a parsing of the announcement of the sale of the domain amptoons.com see the aforementioned "The Revolution Will Be Commodified?—Alternatives to Selling Feminist Websites and Blogs to the Man".
LonerGrrrl writes a thoughtful post on the annual Breast Cancer Campaign drive, examining it critically in "A peek behind the pink curtain".
"There is increasing evidence to suggest that certain chemicals in some of the products we use may be contributing to breast cancer. Phtlates found in hairsprays, perfumes and nail polish; triclosan in toothpastes, body washes, and liquid soap and parabens in shampoo, make-up and bubble bath have all got potential links to the development of breast cancer.
We don't hear much about this, because here the responsibility for prevention doesn't lie with the individual woman. It lies with corporations and government."
Taken out of context this excerpt loses some of its impact; I urge you to read the entire post at LonerGrrrl.
And Pinko Feminist Hellcat takes a load off with her post, "And speaking of commenters…". This is concerning a picture of Bill Clinton with a group of bloggers that was photoshopped to include a burqa.
An apology was issued for the now-infamous photoshopped picture by Amanda Marcotte at Pandagon. The original critique of using a burqa came from Women of Color Blog, and Pinko Feminist Hellcat is responding to the many opinions circulating in the blogosphere about this issue.
