Reporters Without Borders, the international press freedom organization, is calling on bloggers and website owners everywhere to connect to their website between 11 am (Paris time) Nov. 7 and 11 am Nov. 8 to protest internet censorship. Here's a handy time zone converter to help you figure out when the protest would start in your area.
According to the RSF press release, 61 people are currently in prison for posting "subversive" content online. RSF says that they will also compile a list of countries it says are "internet enemies" for blocking free expression online.
Another way to combat online censorship is to join Amnest International's Irrepressible.info campaign. Participants sign a pledge and place a snippet of code on their blogs or websites that picks up feeds from banned websites. Irrepressible.info is the result of a partnership that includes the Open Net Initiative, creators of this dynamic map that shows the state of Internet censorship by governments around the world.
