I’ve always been fascinated by what other people do for a living. I suffer from a severe case of ‘grass is greener’ syndrome and am convinced that most everyone has a more interesting and better lot in life than I do; thus the start of these career interviews and my interrogation of my fellow blogging ladies. Mappy B, of Confessions of a Cartographer, is certainly no exception to my obsession. For, how one goes into cartography is something I’ve never dared to wonder about, but it sounds so incredibly cool and impressive and like it requires a lot of skill and brilliance that I am lacking. So yes, she’s the pinnacle of my fascination because she’s a map maker and instead of fire drills they get to do Hurricane drills, which pretty much puts me in awe of freaking smart she must be. And once again, I am jealous.

What did you want to be when you 'grow up' or perhaps, what do you want to be when you 'grow up'?

I used to want to be either an oceanographer, a famous scuba diver (I have never dove a day in my life) or a weather girl.

Are you doing that now?

Um...not even close. I am three hours from the ocean, am not certified to dive, and have failed Calculus four times (required for the 'weather girl' job).

What did you do (or where, if you are willing to share) for your first job out of college?

My first job out of college was actually my highest paying job. I was a contractor for ComEd - a utility company in Chicago. I was on a huge GIS project that created maps for the entire utility coverage.

Was it the job that you wanted to do?

No, I had no interest in utilities, or utility mapping. The pay was great, and there were about 100 people there around the same age.

A horror story from that first job or a horror story from a job that you got soon thereafter:

No real horror stories, I have been hired to work on 'secure' contracts that fell through about three months after I moved there, signed a lease, and became a state resident.

What do you do now (again, or where, if you are willing to share)?

I am a GIS Analyst (Geographic Information Systems). I make maps.

Is the current position that you hold along the lines of what you really want to do/have always wanted to do?

It's pretty close, I have always loved anything to do with weather and maps, so my current position of mapping hurricanes, emergency events is along the same lines. My dream job would be to work for National Geographic. I would LOVE to make maps for National Geographic. Or own my own company and do personalized mapping for small businesses, tourist places, weddings, etc.

Thanks, Brandi
