(AKA Valerie), my exquisite subject for the week, has a tagline that says “Fat, Drunk, and Happyâ€. Which may have been what attracted me to her site in the first place, but my friends, it’s more like “Beautiful, funny, and Happyâ€. She’s a blog that I found in the very beginning of my foray into Blogdom. And long story short, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be here doing this; in that very roundabout, I found her blog, which led to such and such blog, which led to blah and blah blog, etc. You get the idea, so here goes:
What did you want to be when you 'grow up' or perhaps, what do you want to be when you 'grow up'?
When I was much younger, I wanted to be a nurse. An insane phobia to blood quickly changed my mind. I fell in love with my business classes in high school and decided that I would probably flourish in some sort of business-related career. But deep down, I’ve always wanted to be a writer and have slowly been writing the story of my childhood; mostly in my head, but occasionally on paper. And, of course if that doesn’t work out, I would love to be a teacher.
Are you doing that now?
Though I am working for a major telecommunications company, I am not doing exactly what I thought I would end up doing, but in all fairness, it is a position where I know I can learn and grow within the company.
What did you do (or where, if you are willing to share) for your first job out of college?
I was very fortunate in regard to having a job after college. I began working at a local Northern Virginia bank on one summer break. Every summer break, winter break, spring break, and various long weekends home, I worked at the bank, honing my skills in every area of banking. Once I came home, I called them and said, “What can you do for me?†I started working as the Assistant to the Retail Banking Manager the next week.
Was it the job that you wanted to do?
Yes and no. In all honesty, I never really had another job before working at the bank, so it was pretty much the only job that I knew. It was comfortable. However, working there did give me a ton of great experience as I was promoted throughout the company from a lowly file girl to an Assistant Branch Manager over the course of a few years.
A horror story from that first job or a horror story from a job that you got soon there after:
Part of my many promotions during my time at my first job included a year or so working with the President of the bank; specifically, working with his Corporate Secretary. I would was berated for making the coffee too strong or picking up the wrong kind of Danish for our weekly meetings. This was definitely a stressful time in my “careerâ€, although one never thinks of being in charge of the coffee service as part of a career.
What do you do now (again, or where, if you are willing to share)?
Currently, and thanks strongly to my financial background, I am working at a major telecommunications company as a project analyst.
Is the current position that you hold along the lines of what you really want to do/have always wanted to do?
Although I do enjoy my job, I feel that my true calling somehow involves personally helping people. I do “help†the people I work with and for, but not in a way that will personally benefit them.
What is one thing you have learned while advancing through your career?
I’ve learned that the more eager you are to learn and more proactive you are in even the most tedious situations, the further you will go. Everyone benefits from having a little bit of drive.
Thanks, Valerie
