People tend to ask me what I want as gifts. It's sweet because it means they want to get me something that I really like but kinda takes the surprise out of it. My answer is generally the same - a gift card for a bookstore. But I rarely get them. It seems that many of the people in my life have deemed bookstore gift cards "too impersonal". And people are sometimes wary about buying actual books out of fear that you don't want it or already have it. Fair enough. Luckily if you look around you can find all kinds of fun bookish gifts.

See Jane Work has many fun things. I've wanted these punctuated page markers for months. Many readers hate to write in their books but these allow for a comment of sorts without the use of pen or pencil. If the bookish person in your life is anything like me they read on the run. It never fails that I'll be on the streetcar reading and feel the need to jot down a note for future blogging. These notepads are the perfect size to throw in your bag and even have a little spot in the back for cards - good place to add a gift card, no? And if I still worked in an office instead of at home in my jammies I'd love to receive The Working Girl's Survival Kit which contains things like a toothbrush, toothpaste, stain remover, mints, emory board, etc. Basically all those things that are cluttering up your purse! (Ok, ok, that wasn't book related but I think it's a brilliant idea.)Their "receive by Christmas" shipping varies by your location in the US so please check here to see if you have time.

I love Levenger's reading tools section. Someone could pretty much buy me anything from that section and I'd be a happy, happy reader. I particularly lust for a bookweight. I often eat at restaurants alone and this would be so useful. It can sometimes be a juggling act to try to hold the book in one hand and cut something with the other. (What's that? Put down the book? You're joking right????) And I can't help but think that Levenger's Reader's Bedside Organizer Tray would fit so very nicely in my nightstand. I've sort of longed for their Bloomsbury Book Bag as well. You have until Dec. 15th to order for ground shipping, Dec. 20th for two day shipping and Dec. 21st for next day shipping.

Is the reader on your list particularly fond (I try not to use the term "obsessed") with a particular author? Cafe Press offers a number of amusing gifts. The Republic of Pemberly and the Janeite Supply Shop both offer many things for the Austen fan (I've *ahem* been recently accused of being a fanatic). The Shakespeare Disdains Thee! mug could offer some new names for those pesky coworkers that steal your mug from the coffee room. Dec. 11th is the last day for ground shipping but you have until Dec 18th and 19th for express shipping (unless you are Canadian like me and then you are totally out of luck).

Does your reader love to browse through blogs, magazines and book review sections of the newspaper? What about a gift subscription to Bookmarks Magazine? You'd be giving them the gift of a full year of temptation - something to make you both worshipped and cursed by your recipient.

For the purposes of nostalgia I'm drawn to Hookmarks. My grandfather used a bookmark like this. It was gold and simple and always stuck in whatever western he was reading at the time. They don't have a holiday shipping notice but they use UPS ground delivery and also offer overnight, second- and third-day delivery.

I too am a gift card fan. I like nothing more than to be able to go spend a luxurious hour or two perusing the shelves of a bookstore with "authorized" spending money in my pocket. I actually just did a post on my blog last night about giving teachers' gift certificates as holiday gifts.

What I've taken to doing is just making sure that I have a bunch of books listed on my amazon.com wishlist. Since my BIL works there, most of our family gets their holiday gifts from them and automatically look up wishlists.

I've heard absolutely wonderful things about Library Thing but I have not yet checked it out. I'm afraid I'll get sucked in and never leave. You are right, that's a great idea!

You could give your booklover friends/family a subscription to LibraryThing ( http://librarything.com ). $10 a year or $25 for "lifetime membership". It's amazingly cool, sort of a giant collaborative database where you get social information about books; you can see who owns what, and tag up all your own books.

That's probably what it is. I get excited over a $5 GC from Tim Horton's.

Of course I'd also need to have a bigger apartment to go with them and then gift cards to fill them but those are minor details right?

A few years ago when I was fresh out of school someone gave me a gift certificate for my favourite clothing store. It was so much fun to be able to go shopping when I was broke. :)

Hmmm Whole Foods...I'll have to remember that.

I've often wondered if people dislike gift cards because of the whole money thing. I know some people prefer that you not know how much money they spent.

Mind you, I'd be happy with a $5 gift card. ;)

And maybe it's just me but I find that the longer I try to go without buying the bigger my splurge is...

I'd be happy to get shelves instead of books. (And someone to come over and put them together.) Gift cards are great, though.

I love gift cards and find them incredibly useful and I like being able to pick out what I want, without having to return a sequined sweater of some sort. Last year I actually got a gift card from Whole Foods, which pretty much made my year and my bank account.

I also love See Jane Work, they have great stuff there. But as a book lover and someone obsessed with B&N, if I were to get a gift card from there, I'd be stoked.

Thanks for the great ideas.

I totally get what you mean about gift cards. When ever I say I want a gift card people get this strange curled up mouth and vacant stare.

I talked my MIL into a gift certificate for the beauty shop last year and totally enjoyed it.

Happy Holidays!

A couple of times a year I start to feel the itch and, after a couple of days of studiously ignoring it, I go on a book buying bender on Amazon. While I had never thought of it before, a gift card or two would certainly ease my wallet's day-after pains. Hmm..I gotta get me one of those t-shirts.

If I mention that, then I also have to mention the pancake book and from there the birth house and it's like this never ending list. So no, no mention. Duh, I don't have all day!

Ohhh I never think to ask for gift cards to restaurants. Then again, most of my friends now live in different cities. But I would seriously love a gift card. Maybe instead of a t-shirt I should add that as my email signature? ;)

The autographed Atwood didn't even get a mention? ;) Just kiddding.

I think people don't realize that I'm serious when I say I really want a gift card. Actually, very few people buy my bookish gifts at all. I'm really very easy to shop for - bookie gifts and foodie gifts make me happy.

I give the same answer every year-- gift cards to a bookstore or a restaurant, but I still end up with clothes that don't fit me.

Maybe it's time to sell a t-shirt that says, "All I Want For Christmas Is A Gift Card!"

Be sure to start wearing it on December 1st next year.

A book gift card is excellent! My favorite non-book card "bookie" gifts of recent years have been the bar code scanner (which I don't actually use because it's too much work but it was an excellent and amusing gift) and my small rolling library cart which I definitely use.

Oh and the shelves organized by color, the two biggest kids did that for me for my birthday.
