People tend to ask me what I want as gifts. It's sweet because it means they want to get me something that I really like but kinda takes the surprise out of it. My answer is generally the same - a gift card for a bookstore. But I rarely get them. It seems that many of the people in my life have deemed bookstore gift cards "too impersonal". And people are sometimes wary about buying actual books out of fear that you don't want it or already have it. Fair enough. Luckily if you look around you can find all kinds of fun bookish gifts.
See Jane Work has many fun things. I've wanted these punctuated page markers for months. Many readers hate to write in their books but these allow for a comment of sorts without the use of pen or pencil. If the bookish person in your life is anything like me they read on the run. It never fails that I'll be on the streetcar reading and feel the need to jot down a note for future blogging. These notepads are the perfect size to throw in your bag and even have a little spot in the back for cards - good place to add a gift card, no? And if I still worked in an office instead of at home in my jammies I'd love to receive The Working Girl's Survival Kit which contains things like a toothbrush, toothpaste, stain remover, mints, emory board, etc. Basically all those things that are cluttering up your purse! (Ok, ok, that wasn't book related but I think it's a brilliant idea.)Their "receive by Christmas" shipping varies by your location in the US so please check here to see if you have time.
I love Levenger's reading tools section. Someone could pretty much buy me anything from that section and I'd be a happy, happy reader. I particularly lust for a bookweight. I often eat at restaurants alone and this would be so useful. It can sometimes be a juggling act to try to hold the book in one hand and cut something with the other. (What's that? Put down the book? You're joking right????) And I can't help but think that Levenger's Reader's Bedside Organizer Tray would fit so very nicely in my nightstand. I've sort of longed for their Bloomsbury Book Bag as well. You have until Dec. 15th to order for ground shipping, Dec. 20th for two day shipping and Dec. 21st for next day shipping.
Is the reader on your list particularly fond (I try not to use the term "obsessed") with a particular author? Cafe Press offers a number of amusing gifts. The Republic of Pemberly and the Janeite Supply Shop both offer many things for the Austen fan (I've *ahem* been recently accused of being a fanatic). The Shakespeare Disdains Thee! mug could offer some new names for those pesky coworkers that steal your mug from the coffee room. Dec. 11th is the last day for ground shipping but you have until Dec 18th and 19th for express shipping (unless you are Canadian like me and then you are totally out of luck).
Does your reader love to browse through blogs, magazines and book review sections of the newspaper? What about a gift subscription to Bookmarks Magazine? You'd be giving them the gift of a full year of temptation - something to make you both worshipped and cursed by your recipient.
For the purposes of nostalgia I'm drawn to Hookmarks. My grandfather used a bookmark like this. It was gold and simple and always stuck in whatever western he was reading at the time. They don't have a holiday shipping notice but they use UPS ground delivery and also offer overnight, second- and third-day delivery.
