One Missing Climber Found Dead

Oregon authorities say one of the climbers lost on Mt. Hood has been found dead. Officials have yet to identify the deceased.

Captain Mike Braibish of the Oregon National Guard confirmed the climber was discovered in a snow cave and that the climbers' families have been notified.

Searchers entered a different snow cave hoping to find at least one of the three missing climbers who have been lost on Mount Hood for nine days. But there was no one inside.

Jen writes, "IT HURT MY HEART CAUSE HERE I AM BICKERING ABOUT MY PROBLEMS AND COMPLAINING THAT I HATE MY LIFE WHEN FOR THE PAST WEEK I HAVE BEEN WARM IN MY BED, UNDER SHELTER, SEEING MY FAMILY, EATING ALL THE FOOD I WANT AND 3 CLIMBERS HAVE BEEN FIGHTING FOR THEIR LIVES."

Lisa says, "These are all experience outdoorsmen, who were aware of the conditions on the mountain. If anyone has a chance these 2 men do. The fact that only one hiker was found in the cave, while sad, can offer some hope for the remaining 2."

Frances writes, "Now the focus is on finding the two climbers, although they found one cave with two ice picks in it. They had a man on the news that had led dozens of hikes up Mt Hood, and what he said is that a climbers ice pick is used for safety, that if they were to start sliding, their ice pick would be used to stop them. He said the last thing a climber would want to leave behind is their ice pick, and he speculated that maybe a reason why they would do that would be because they were suffering from hypothermia which affects judgement."

Mt Hood Climbers

While I'm very sorry for the families of these climbers, they were completely irresponsible to go up the mountain in December without a GPS. I live on Mt. Hood, it's a dangerous mountain. 15 teenagers died on it in 1986 in one tragedy. Since that time, GPS locaters are available at Timberline Lodge to climbers for a nominal fee which is returned after they climb. Why on earth would supposedly experienced climbers go without one? They were over-confident and looks like they have paid the consequences.
