BlogHer Business Conference '07: First look at our schedule
by Elisa Camahort

Today I am pleased to give you the first glimpse at our BlogHer Business Conference '07 programming.

While there are still speakers that are yet to be confirmed, every speaker listed in these published schedules is signed, sealed and delivered. And what a group they are!

Representing big companies (e.g. Cisco, Google and Yahoo!)

Representing start-ups (e.g. SheFinds and Linden Lab.)

Representing media companies (e.g. Hearst, MarketWatch, and FastCompany.)

Plus many more, including some of the social media world's gurus on topics from teen marketing to social software to blogger relations.

This schedule was built based on lots of feedback from all of you, and lots of submissions. Plenty of self-submission, but plenty of BlogHers recommending other BlogHers. It's all part of the spirit of do-ocracy that we talk about here. The schedule also would never have come together without the advice and improvements from our BlogHer Business Programming Advisory Committee. So, thanks to them.

I hope you'll check out this schedule and be intrigued and excited:

Day One's Schedule
Day Two's Schedule

You'll notice on Day One that we are planning an "Ask the Experts" segment, and that we currently list a number of topics, prefaced by this statement: "Topics to be voted on and finalized, but may include:"

As always, this is where you come in. Before finalizing the list we'd love your input on the kinds of topics on which you'd like a little free consulting. When you register we'll ask you again, but feel free to comment here or email us with your preferences. Then we'll line up the Experts!

We will keep you posted as new speakers are confirmed, and we will post more detailed information on every session. Until then, check out the schedules here and here. Then head on over to register and reserve your hotel room. We'll be seeing you in NYC in three short months!

Writing?

Elisa, I know you're still filling holes and working on the schedule, but I don't see anything on there about WRITING.

There's lots of stuff up there about tools and processes and community, but ultimately, blogs are made up of words and images.

If you're running a business blog, who should be writing it? Should you hire a writer or do it yourself? What makes a good blog entry?

If I remember the program (and I may be mistaken) I thought this was missing from BlogHer in San Jose and wonder if it's isn't missing here, too. In the frenzy to create a popular/successful/lucrative blog, are we overlooking or undervaluing the foundation of the blog itself: good writing?

02 from a gal with an admitted agenda around the glory of the written word. :)

Writers and writing...

Hey Pam:

Thanks for the question. Here's how we see it:

About 2006: At Blogher '06 Lisa and Lynne D. Johnson did lead a writing session on Day One, so while one session can never cover such a broad topic as writing for blogs, it was there. The annual event covers so much ground and addresses so many topics...really each particular area of interest whether technical or cultural gets one session. When we sit down and start working on '07's content we will probably discuss whether we should do any deeper diving on certain subjects, but the last two years the philosophy has really been to accommodate as many different ideas, topics and suggestions as we possibly could.

About BlogHer Business: We do envision that the "How to Embrace the Social Media Culture" session, which includes in its description questions such as "who should blog for your company?" and "how do you enact authenticity?" will address the very salient question about who and how to blog for a company. In that entire center track we also tried to get speakers with a diversity of perspectives on how to answer those questions. We have folks who have hired outside bloggers, folks who have helped companies find appropriate blogs to sponsor, companies who have many authors from within their company, and companies who have picked a single representative. So I expect that exploring how to find that right blogger or mix of bloggers will permeate the first two sessions in that track.

We also had been considering an Ask the Experts topic centered around Blog Content Cultivation...but given the interest expressed in more writing programming at the annual event (see, you were not alone!) we were thinking of saving that for an actual session at BlogHer '07.

Hope that clarifies a bit where we see writing being part of the conference.
