December doesn't just mean holiday weight gain. For some people it signals the beginning of winter depression also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. It seems as though more and more people are being diagnosed with SAD every year, or diagnosing themselves with SAD. There are so many blog entries about this topic, it feels like an epidemic.
Do you get winter blues? Lisa Renee does:
on days where the sun does not shine I feel as if I have less energy than on the days that even if cold have the sun shining brightly. Especially here in Ohio when we have a period of several days in a row without one peep of sunlight, after the second day of no sun, I begin to notice it a bit and in several of my friends who are affected by this more they definitely feel it by the second day.
At I will not eat the darkness, Anais has discovered a correlation between winter and her eating disorder.
I never thought of myself as suffering from S.A.D., but I was thinking about it just now and I realized that it's in the winter-time when my eating disorders hit me the hardest. I tend to lose 20-30 pounds every winter and then gain it back when the weather starts getting warm (just in time for swimsuits *sigh*). So, I guess I do suffer from S.A.D. in a way. I have been diagnosed with chronic severe depression, so it's hard for me to determine sometimes when it gets worse you know? I can tell when I'm feeling better, but how do you classify levels of chronic severe depression? I wouldn't have the first idea.
The Princess suggests you go shopping for tools to help with SAD and writing is fun has considered buying a lamp. Kari has one and she really has noticed a difference.
I have more energy. My mood is elevated. I don’t feel like crying without any cause. My appetite is normal, if not quelled some (which it ought to be, as I am carrying around plenty of “stored energyâ€). When I am hungry, I am again hungry for normal foods in an array of food groups. I don’t have to have sweets and carbs. And when I say “have to have,†I mean it had been practically, if not altogether, uncontrollable prior to today. I would actually pick up the phone if it rang today. I haven’t wanted to do that in weeks. If I had a call today asking me to start the phone chain for our chapel, I would not hesitate to begin. The past few weeks I have put it off, and simply e-mailed anyone I possibly could or asked my husband to make some of the calls.
Do you have the winter blues? Have you consulted with your physician about a possible SAD diagnosis and treatment options? Don't suffer needlessly, there really is help out there.
