Kansas Attorney General uses last days in office to attack abortion rights- even though he lost bid for re-election
Some time ago Lisa and I wrote about Bill O'Reilly and Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline's fishy collaboration to criminalize Dr. George Tiller, who performs abortions in Wichita. In his zeal to prosecute Tiller, Kline seems to have leaked medical records to O'Reilly, and generally used the O'Reilly show as a bully pulpit to attack Tiller. [img_assist|fid=2653|thumb=1|alt=Dr. of Death]
Kline lost his bid for re-election in November, but he is still determined to put Dr. Tiller in jail. The Kansas City Star reports "Kline is alleging that Tiller’s Wichita clinic performed illegal late-term abortions and didn’t report the details to state health officials. Each count is punishable by jail time and fines."
Luckily, he is meeting roadblocks in court and the district court would not reinstate criminal charges against Tiller. The case has been thrown out twice. But as Deborah at Newshounds reports, Kline's buddies at Fox News Channel continue to press his case that Dr. Tiller is a criminal. This is disgusting even for Fox News.
Operation Rescue is planning a major protest outside Tiller's clinic in January. On their webpage, they lead with a quote from Bill O'Reilly:
“You know, I’ve been covering the news in America for 30 years and this Kansas situation is the worst thing I’ve ever seen…Americans cannot turn away from this; cannot ignore it. There should be thousands of people demonstrating outside Tiller’s abortion clinic in Wichita.†-Fox News Host Bill O’Reilly
This is a witch hunt against Dr. Tiller. Even though Kline lost his bid for re-election, he seems to determined to go down fighting- and he has fearsome company. Visit the Operation Rescue page and see for yourself- this is powerful propaganda- as you can see from the image in this post, courtesy of the Operation Rescue site.
How to fight back? Ideas welcome.

Sad and angry at the news
This is so disappointing, except utterly unsurprising. It makes me so angry that people can just target Dr. Tiller like this. Everyone who has ever met him knows that he is extremely kind and compassionate. There was a wonderful NY Times article on late abortions that came out earlier this year, and it is so clear that he performs a critical service for many women with no where else to turn.
Hopefully there will be some counter defense planned as happened in Missouri this summer when the only clinic there was under siege. My husband always suggests treating the protesters like they treat us (ie - protesting outside their homes and threatening to kill their staff), but that probably is not the best solution. No need to add to the lack of respect for other people, right?
