This week I'd like to post about music, so if you're a Latin American, Latina, or Chicana music blogger or musician, email me some great links please!
Alisa Lynn Valdes, blogger at La Queen Sucia, wrote about a favorite band, The Latin Playboys, the other day, and then ... to her surprise, someone associated with the band wrote back:
Turns out John was surfing blogs, saw mine blogrolled somewhere else, checked it out of curiosity – and there was the post about the musicians he works with. In his own words, “the timing was a little weird.â€
Now he's sending her a new album, "The Town and the City", from Los Lobos. (If you're curious, you can hear a track from the album on YouTube.) I wonder if the band hired a publicist to track what people are saying about them on blogs and the web? Does it even matter?
I know people get upset about blogging, reviewing products, and ethical considerations, but book reviewers get books for free, so why shouldn't bloggers get whatever they review? I'm wondering how BlogHer readers think that the ethics of different industries, products, or markets are different.
Anyway, I enjoyed Alisa's posts - and I second her recommendation for the Latin Playboys. They can be hyperactive and random alongside a funky groove, like in "Mr. Wobble", or mellow, soothing, meditative, downtempo -- as they are in "Lemon and Ice".
Last year around February, at a party for SXSWi, I met a guy from YouTube who asked if I'd heard of their company. It seems funny to remember now that no one I knew had heard of it, but I had seen it all over Latin American blogs.
