Recent Activity by Category?

It used to be the case that when I clicked on "Recent Activity", I could see a little drop down menu that would let me check recent activity by category. I could log in, immediately check my area (Entertainment), then go on to browse the other areas that interest me.

The way it is now, there is a long list of new posts, but there's no way for me to tell what category they're in and I can't browse by topic on the sidebar, either.

Is there some other way to do this that I'm missing?
