Telenovelas are a type of Soap Opera, Ugly Betty is a type of Telenovela, therefore the masked woman is ...
We begin this episode with Betty sitting with her family lamenting losing her job at Mode. Hilda arrives and announces that Herbalux has been recalled and so she is also out of a job. Betty resumes her lamenting and Hilda cuts her off, saying that there is no comparison because Betty already has a new job. And with that Betty dons her sombrero of snacks and gets back to work as a "chip chick."
Wilhelmina plots with the masked woman to take over Meade Publishing. Marc takes Polaroids of everyone at the office and Wil uses the photos to post on a board noting who is In and who is Out. Wilhelmina wants Amanda out and tells Marc, "You're going to miss your little beard. How cute!"
We see a Kathy Griffin cameo (Tim Gunn is coming next month!) as a Fashion Television reporter reporting that Daniel has been in Rio for the past weeks after Sofia's revenge.
Betty heads over to his loft to welcome Daniel back from Rio since she feels guilty for encouraging Daniel to propose to Sofia. Daniel is there and clearly has been there the whole time as he is disheveled and surrounded with take out containers. He hides when he hears Betty arrive. Betty hears him bumping around and grabs her whistle and a raquetball raquet. I love that Betty is so prepared with that whistle!
Betty finds Daniel and gives him a righteous pep talk and Daniel marvels about how much Betty has learned about the fashion world at Mode and then asks about MYW. Betty tells him that she quit and Daniel asks, "would it be really childish to high five you?"
Daniel offers her her old job back - yay!
Hilda prepares to go job hunting and asks Justin for fashion advice but he punts. Ignacio and Hilda try to discourage her from choosing either skimpy top and then they look at her skimpy resume and recommend the purple. Hilda continues to run interference between Betty and Henry, thinking Henry is a moneyed, flashy wall street type and continues to extol the virtues of Walter (who cheated on Betty with Hilda's arch enemy Gina).
Betty joins Daniel for their triumphant return to the Mode office. Daniel is still feeling shamed and isn't helped by posters all over town promoting MYW's inagural issue and the "Fling to Ring" article. Betty gives another pep talk but adds, "Can we discuss this Cheetos tan? You look like an oompa-loompa." Daniel's "pretend I look like I went to Rio for 2 weeks" tan is the source for a few more sight gags.
Daniel explains that Betty and Amanda will both be his assistant and Amanda repeatedly insists that she'll be in charge. Betty then encourages Daniel to get back on the horse by attending a model casting promising "hotties" and "boobs." Daniel begs Betty to never say "boobs" again which I think is because it reminds him of Sofia.
Betty has a bright idea and tells Amanda to put an 8 p.m. date on his calendar, exclaiming "I'm going to get him a new horse to ride." Adding, "that didn't sound as dirty in my head."
Kicking around the idea with Christina, Christina suggests supermodel Giselle. Betty admires one of Christina's designs and Christina tells Betty that it's for a fashion week contest for which Wilhelmenia picks the contestants (meaning Christina is never chosen). Betty hopefully offers, "Well she'll die eventually." Christina scarily predicts, "No, she won't."
Marc alerts Amanda to her need to prove her loyalty to Queen Wil so she won't be "Out." So Amanda cancels Giselle and Marc proclaims. "The bitch is back!"
Back at Casa Suarez, Hilda has turned the home into a cupcake factory, having come up with the bright entreprenurial idea to sell "Grandma" (Ignacio) Suarez's cupcakes to a local diner. Much Lucy in the chocolate factory type hilarity ensues.
After Betty discovers that Giselle was cancelled she rushes to the diner to save Daniel from the paparazzi she had arranged. As the shutterbugs snap away, Betty informs Daniel that the story will now be: "Daniel Meade having dinner with his adorable and witty assistant to discuss her much deserved raise." Go Betty!
