Congratulations everyone!
One year ago today the BlogHer Network was born. On Jan. 30, 2006, we launched this community hub at http://www.blogher.com, a huge step from the little three-woman blog we used to kick-off the first BlogHer Conference '05.
As I describe below, 2007 is going to bring more change...but first let's look at what we accomplished together in 2006.
In the past year, this community expanded steadily to become the premiere Web guide to women bloggers, a 24/7 embodiment of our mission: "To create opportunities for women bloggers to seek exposure, education and community."
Today BlogHer.org includes:
Our reporting about the community has made news of its own -- via the many sites and news outlets that have linked to BlogHer.org, and reported on and lauded conversations led by women in this community.
We have a global reach: In the past year, BlogHer's announcements and some of our thousands of RSS feeds recommending blogs by women have been picked up from The Times of India to The Guardian and Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.
The temptation is strong to link my favorites from the past year's coverage, but I wouldn't do all the writing and exceptional conversations justice. You'll have to read them for yourselves: Art & Design, BlogHer Conferences, Business, Career & Personal Finance, Entertainment & Books, Fashion & Shopping, Feminism & Gender, Food & Drink, Health & Wellness.Hobbies, Crafts & DIY, Law, Life, Media & Journalism, Mommy & Family, Politics & News, Race, Ethnicity & Culture, Religion & Spirituality, Research, Academia & Education, Sex & Relationships, Social Change, Non-Profits & NGOs, Sports & Fitness, Technology & Web, Travel and World.
What's next (hint: don't get comfy)
In 2006, we achieved much of our goal -- to do away with the question, "Where are the women bloggers?" by delivering a daily drumbeat about women who blog and use social media. We will continue this goal into the coming year; On BlogHer.org, anyone who writes and reads blogs can and should list blog(s)by women, and find others, learn what's hot in the blogosphere from BlogHer's incredible contributing editors, and report news of our own, professional and personal.
In 2007, our quest is to continue to develop services that support the power, authority and creativity of the women in this community. To that end, our first major project will be redesigning this Web site.
In the redesign of http://www.blogher.com, we are excited to deliver a number of innovations that many of you have recommended. Our primary quest is to make BlogHer.org easier to use -- for you to find blogs by topic, find bloggers themselves, and, if you're a blogger, TO BE FOUND.
We also are working on a new way to help you easily track comments by the community, to help you recommend your own blog headlines on the site, as well as to open the site to more community blog participation.
To help us in this effort -- and to turn up the volume on our design a little too -- we've invited Emily Chang and Max Kiesler of Ideacodes to help.
But we can only be successful if you help us too. So please stay tuned -- we're planning to bring the draft redesign to you in February for your feedback. When you see it, we'll want to know what you love, what you hate -- the works; we want to hear it.
So, congratulations again, birthday grrls. Our goal is to relaunch in March. Consider this post a raincheck -- you just have to wait a few months for your present.
Best,
Lisa

Marianne, you coverage of social media in the past year has been fantastic -- I'm really excited to see you add your insights into how the campaigns of American presidential candidates are using social media in the next year. As one of your readers, thank you!

A year, already? ;)
I've every confidence that you will meet (and most likely) exceed your plans for 2007, given how you met (and, in my opinion, wildly exceeded) your hopes for 2006.
I'm proud of you all, and happy that so many have benefited from the fruits of that original vision. Maybe this is a timely moment to remind people that those who have benefited most have probably done so in proportion to the level of their involvement? Do-ocracy, anybody? :)
With July in Chicago now a "this year, not next year" concept, let's not forget the old adage about the more you put in, the more you get out. Instead of just turning up to the conference and expecting it all to be handed on a plate... or reading the site's content, but rarely engaging in comments or forum discussions... join in! Make it even better. (And yes, I realise that the accusation of inactivity is just as applicable to me.)
You are right Koan ~ the only way 2007 will
happen right
...is if we all dig together. Elisa, who leads our conference planning effort, is preparing to launch a number of open calls for action on this site. I dearly dearly hope you are still planning to join us in Chicago?
Thank you for being one of our founding editors and for all you have done for women who blog.

Thank you for everything you have done in the past year to report on Nonprofits and NGOs. I'm still in awe of the nearly $100k you raised for your favorite cause: . Here's to more of you showing us how it's done in '07.

And right back at you all!
And Koan: thanks, as ever, for your graceful but timely reminders about the spirit of do-ocracy. For those of you who may be newer to BlogHer, and to that word, you can find our original definition of do-ocracy here, and more about what do-ocracy looks like in action on this page.
Happy Anniversary to us all :)

Happy Birthday, BlogHer!
Wow. It seems like BlogHer has always been here! This is pretty much the only place I can stomach reading news and enjoy reading about relationships.
Thank you to everyone involved in bringing all of these AMAZING women together!
I have laughed and cried and learned and been inspired.
I learned feminism is NOT a dirty word! And I've become even more dedicated to inspiring and supporting other women (I started interviewing women in design so that I can share their stories of success and support systems and inspire other women that they can thrive in a male-dominated field).
~standing round of applause~ Don't know how to thank all of these fabulous, brilliant women enough!

Happy Birthday!
Last night when I arrived at my hotel in Seattle I sent a message..or I thought a sent a birthday message...must not have hit the post button. What I said yesterday, holds true today..a day after the birthday. Being part of this organization is an honor. While I was waiting for my delayed plane, a woman sitting next to me asked what I did. I shared I was a marketing consultant, a blogger and a contributing editor to Blogher..a network of women bloggers. It makes me smile every time I say it.
Thank you for making this a wonderful year. I feel privileged to be part of this network and am inspired by the talent and dedication of the people who are making Blogher what it is.

Elana, your posts on working and working women have bene a huge highlight for me as a reader. I love your tone and always know that when people poke a stick in the eye of women in the workplace, they are going to have to defend themselves. Thank YOU!

New design, hurrah!!
Happy birthday!
I am very excited to hear about the site re-design. The current design has really grated on my nerves - a lot of the text shows up pixelated and tiny on my iBook and makes things hard to read.
The interface is somewhat confusing to use as well. I know it is a major challenge organizing all of the amazing content here. I'm not a huge design corporation but I have 5+ years experience designing websites for women if any additional help/input is needed (ha, I'm so sure!). I look forward to the changes.

Kerflop, you're right
Larger text, a richer graphic design, a functional search and the ability to easily find our favorite topics, blogs and bloggers -- those are the holy grail of our redesign.
Thank you for volunteering to help -- I'd love your feedback. I'll post all redesign info in the "Web site" topic area. Here's the RSS feed for that topic: http://www.blogher.com/taxonomy/term/117/9/feed
Here's the current plan: We'll be back within the next couple of weeks with a few new visuals for you to comment on. At the same time, we have indeed begun working on a plan to leverage the new version of Drupal (4.7) and modules designed to help us poor users (a) understand what's here and (b) find what we're really looking for. Turns out that there are some exciting new ways to view the huge database driving this site.
Really looking forward to your additional thoughts once we've delivered these here!
