Did you miss it? Yesterday was World Nutella Day, and a lot of folks were licking their spoons as they created gooey treats featuring this chocolate and hazelnut spread. The celebration has even spawned a permanent site dedicated to the glories of Nutella.
World Nutella Day was a co-creation of Sara from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Shelley from At Home in Rome. Sara explains how the event got started:
Nutella is more than just a “chocolaty hazelnut spread,†it is a way of life. From childhood memories to oozing hot crepes, from breakfasts on vacation, to free-spooning sessions on the couch, Nutella is present in the memories of many of the children and grown-up children in the world.
And it doesn’t have its own holiday.
We’re about to change that.
For more Nutella creations than you'll ever be able to make by the one year anniversary of World Nutella Day, check out the round-up of Nutella recipes, Part One and Part Two. There are Nutella recipes here for eveyone, and even a Nutella Day Flickr Pool.
Food and Drink editor Kalyn Denny from Kalyn's Kitchen sheepishly confesses she has never even tasted Nutella.

Yum...Nutella!
I have some international friends, and very single one of them raves about Nutella and buys it regularly. I had never had it before I met them. It's not as big here in the U.S., but I bet it would be if it were more well-known. You don't see commercials and advertisements for Nutella like you do for so many other things.

I Think You're Right
Zandria, I think you're right that a lot of Americans haven't tried it, but I hear that once you try it you'll be hooked. I have a friend who eats it on toast like peanut butter and loves it!

Nutella
I would have commented last night, Kalyn but your post inspired me to go make a banana and Nutella sandwich and it's not polite to comment with your mouth full. ;)
Seriously, it's wonderfully addictive. And, Zandria, you're right about the limited marketing. I've seen some of their efforts at professional conferences and they are not grand but I think they would need to reach a tipping point of popularity to afford more extensive efforts. Until then it will be a cult favorite here and just have to spread word of mouth - and blog.
