Ghost Riding: A message for teen drivers

In honor of my baby's 17th birthday and her first steps towards a driver's license and a car, I'm going to send fear into the hearts of every parent of teens.  It's the least I can do.

Have you ever heard the term "ghost riding"?  How about "ghost ride the whip"?  Ghost riding is what the young folk call being stupid with their cars.  They'll be driving along, at slow speed, open the car door and get out - while the car is moving.  The car keeps moving.  The kids climb on the hood, the roof, the trunk - and they dance, or sing or just trash talk a bit.

Craziness.  Pure craziness.

I'm not going to get all anti hip hop or anything like that, I don't believe this is about music, it's about common sense.  And hip hoppers aren't any more lacking in that than any other group of musicians or music lovers.

Just tell your kids that this is dangerous and take their darn car keys away if they think it's funny.

Hello. In response to Zandria's comments on this blog I decided that, as a Ghost Rider, I should answer her question. Zandria said that she " I don't understand what goes through these people's heads. Boredom?" Please allow me to describe my personal experience with Ghost Riding in order to answer your question.

Why do I Ghost Ride? Bordem? Hell no. It's basically me realizing how pimp I am and wanting to express it through some kind of physical/visual means. When you're as HAWT as I am you can't contain yourself you have to release this awesome force or else you might go insane in the membrane on some poor unsuspecting fool. So, instead of poppin' a cap in somebodies ass I GhostRide.
Oh you should Ghostride Zandria. When you hear that bass beating into your chest...oh god, its unreal. The testosterone starts pumping through you (even if you're a woman) and suddenly you feel this carnal desire to 'push it to the limit'. Suddenly you rip out of the car and in a frenzy leap ontop of the car. Then it happens. The car is rollin' and no one is drivin'. Then you know. This is the greatest moment of your life. You have given the wheel of the bus of your life to Casper the steadily accelerating ghost.
When you get into a car,
And you're feelin' like a star,
Whatcha gonna do?
Ghost Ridin'.

Actually I have been following the ghost riding trend, with some alarm over the past month. Originally polarized by videos on Youtube, the mainstream media has scrambled to report on this Stockton, California birthed craze. Associated with the Hip-Hop movement and popularized in a song or two in that genre, teens all over the country are in for more glamorization – more songs, a musical and more media reports.

Despite our best efforts as parents and the media’s semi-responsible response (interviews with police and caution warnings) sadly, I see more injuries resulting from this trend. Ghost riding has been around for years, it’s the association with well known artists and teen media exposure that is the concern.

How can we in the blog sphere get the word out and provide advice for parents?

They had something about it on the news a month or so back, when someone had gotten killed because of ghost riding. I thought about my 18-year-old brother when I saw it (even though, to my knowledge, he's never done it), and I hoped he wouldn't be so stupid to ever try anything like that. I don't understand what goes through these people's heads. Boredom?
