In a totally unplanned twist, I ended up staring over a chicken wire fence yesterday. The object of my fascination? The Walker Rock Garden. Wow, talk about yer outta control hobbies - I mean, unsung genius. Seriously, though, I love this kind of madness and we stumble upon it now and then in our wanderings throughout the US.
There's a terrific compendium of these oddball sights/sites at Roadside America. You gotta go see these things before they go away.
More than 150 Florida roadside attractions have closed since the heyday of the 1950s and '60s. Victims of interstates that bypassed the two-lane amusements, changing tastes in entertainment and stricter government regulations, many of Florida's mom-and-pop sites are on the endangered list.--Amateur Economist
Bloggers and photographers love roadside attractions - those unexpected diversions off the Interstate, far away from the McDs and Chevron islands in the middle of nowhere. Here are instructions on how to find The Thing? - but no photos The Thing? itself:
The Thing? is located just off I-10 at Exit 318 on a hilltop between Benson and Willcox, near Texas Canyon, at 2631 North Johnson Road in Dragoon. On the south side of the highway, the attraction is part of a large gas station and gift shop complex painted red, yellow and blue. Amid the bows and arrows, moccasins, baseball caps, velvet paintings and turquoise jewelry, the gift shop also sells The Thing? shot glasses, bumper stickers and T-shirts.--Goal Beyond
The Hot Dog Johnny's site complete with swag. And there's a nice roundup about roadside attractions here on Blue Crab Boulevard. Nothing to See Here posts pics from the classic South Dakota Wall Drug - and from any number of off beat destinations. The Lunchbox Museum, The Pineapple, The Knitted Village... wow, who knew? (Ooo, I love this blog.)
Flickr, of course, is a gold mine of roadside attraction pics. There's a giant blue snake, a school bus painted like an alligator, half buried cars... if you're as fascinated as I am, you wont be able to get enough of this stuff. Ever since I came across the third largest Abraham Lincoln sculpture in the US (painted gold), the Art Yard, and Elvis of the Yukon, I've been a sucker for roadside diversions.
Take the back roads, peek over the fence. It's okay. You never know what you'll find.
