Professional development tips from the academic blogosphere
by Leslie Madsen Brooks

If you thought the academic blogosphere was all about whining and angst, then you've been missing out on some recent posts that include really terrific advice for grad students and junior faculty.

Perhaps the leader in doling out free and incredibly helpful advice is Dr. Crazy of Reassigned Time. Check out her posts on the value of academic blogging, networking, the challenges of the tenure track, job talks, grading and close reading, getting an academic book contract, and about encouraging or discouraging students from attending grad school.

Dr. Crazy doesn't have a monopoly on sound advice, however. Here's a sampling from around the academic blogosphere:

Profgrrrrl shares some cautionary tales from a search committee and muses about Institutional Review Boards.

Dr. Free-Ride considers whether blogging should be counted as an academic activity.

Sarah of Mommy, Ph.D. offers counsel on whether to get one's Master's degree before going for a doctorate.

What good advice have you seen (or given) in the blogosphere lately?

Leslie Madsen-Brooks is an academic technologist and freelance writer who blogs at The Clutter Museum.

not exactly about grad school...

but I did write a post on different university types (sparked from bickering about "top universities") that may help people consider the right matches for them.

*seeking some love in the non-grad-school department!*
