Goodbye 5 a Day, Hello More Matters!
It's the end of an era, at least that's how it feels to me!
The good people at the Produce for Better Health Foundation have said goodbye to the "5 a Day the Color Way" and hello to "Fruits & Veggies More Matters". I don't know about you, but I'm going to miss the 5 a Day slogan - it was much catchier.
What exactly does "more matters" mean, anyway? It was much easier to determine whether or not we were eating enough fruits and vegetables when we could simply think "Oh 5 a day... did I eat 5 portions of fruits and vegetables?" Now, we think "More matters! More than what?"
If you check out their dietary guidelines section, they don't really clear that up. You have to move on over to the good old, I mean new, My Pyramid site to determine just how many servings of fruits and vegetables you need and once you get there... oy....
I'm 43 and not overweight. I get very little exercise. All of this means that I need 2 cups of vegetables and 1 1/2 cups of fruit everyday.
My 17 year old daughter who is not overweight and more active than I am needs 2 1/2 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit!
My son is 19, underweight, and gets very little exercise. He needs 3 1/2 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruit a day.
It's all so complicated! 5 a day made sense to me. More matters, not so much.
