BlogHer '07 "Know Before You Go" - It's In The Cards

In case you missed it, registration for BlogHer '07 is OPEN! Read all about it here.

And as part of the so-excited-can't-wait process leading up to the event, every week I'll be posting a "Know Before You Go" update.

Up first: the business of business cards.

You probably didn't need another at-work time-sink (ahem), but creating your own business cards online is fun, fast, easy, and relatively inexpensive. It's also a great way to promote yourself and your blog when you're too busy mingling with hundreds of other bloggers to write everyone's name and URL down.

Last year, I saw lots of amazing and artistic cards -- and some with nothing more than a blog's title -- and wished I'd thought to make my own. (Turns out "She Just Walks Around With It" is not so easy to remember!)

A quick search on Google for "customized business cards" yields a ton of results, so you can take your pick. I've used www.iPrint.com and been happy with their results, but I'm sure our BlogHers have additional suggestions.

If you want to get really creative and use something fancy like notecards, you could always poke around www.zazzle.com, too (what was that about time-sinks?).

Of course, cards are in no way necessary, but they DO make great conversation starters. Plus I'll admit to getting a certain thrill seeing my blog's name in print.

What are your thoughts? And please, if you have any examples you'd like to share -- feel free!

Any idea on a rough number of cards/stickers I should bring? What were people's experiences last year on the number they went through?

Thanks!

A friend helped me design them, and I ordered them today from http://www.contagiousgraphics.com/

OMG, I hope they are cool!!!

I have no idea how many to bring.

Also, I decided against cards. Just bringing my stickers that have my blog address on them. There's an "email me" right in my upper left corner, you know?

Who knows, it's a grand experiment. Much better than the nothing I brought last year!

Hi whymommmy,

I think most of the places people recommended above also make stickers.

A lot of people put stickers on their laptops (or in/around their workspaces), so something eye-catching yet simple, like a logo or URL, would probably make the most sense.

I love DesignYourOwnCard.com ( http://designyourowncard.com/ ). I've ordered a couple boxes of their raised-ink cards. It's pricier than many places online, but sooooo worth it. Very elegant and cool, with a nice selection of fonts and styles.

I love the moo cards but you have to be careful how you layout them out.

Shameless yet relevant self-pimpage here: Browse the Cool Mom Picks archives under paper goods and there are tons of small companies, all of them women/mom-run, that will do professional, cool looking cards for you for not too much $.

Not as cheap as DIY but as a complete incompetent DIY-er, I'll take the trade-off.

We've promoted them as "mom calling cards" but of course they're more versatile than that. It's not like they have pictures of diapers on them.

A couple recent options: helloink.com, fruition-designs.com (10% off with code cmp10), eventbliss.com, annabellababy.com.

give me a refund and allow me to order a reprint but it wasn't in time for BlogHer. So their customer service IS good when they screw up. No doubt about that. :-)

Denise, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with them. I ordered magnet calendars to give my family and friends for Christmas this year. They weren't delivered (I thought they had been stolen, until they showed up at a neighbor's house months later) and when I called VistaPrint, they not only promptly sent me a replacement order, but refunded all the shipping costs for something that wasn't even their fault. (And no, VistaPrint is not paying me for these endorsements, I just really like them!)

I've been happy with Vista Print in the past, but last year that was who "f'd" up my magnets! Heh.

Skye, I used VistaPrint too, and they're great. I've been very happy with everything I've ordered there (including a big stamp that stamps my name and address - no more address labels for the rest of my life!)

IMHO cards are a must for Blogher Conference.

Tip: If you already have a business card you like, but it doesn't have your blog(s) on it, get address labels made with your blog URL(s) and stick them on the back of the cards.

I used Vistaprint to make my cards, just downloaded their template for Photoshop and set it up myself, then uploaded. Fast service, good quality.

BlogHer definitely needs more stickers, so I hope to see a lot of them this year.

Last year I was such a newbie that it never occurred to me to even think about cards. Why? What for? How come? This year I'm such a seasoned BlogHer that I may do two--one for my blog and one for Flickr. Oh yes...and maybe stickers too.

Or maybe not.

Last year, I was woefully unprepared and had no cards. I made some up on my laptop using a business card template, then ran down to the business center to print them out and photo copy them. Sadly, the business center had no scissors. Happily, the front desk did so I stood there cutting them out at the front desk, who thought I was insane.

This year, I am all set to bring cute stickers with my blog logo and URL.

I'm going with Denise and Kayln on VistaPrint. Very inexpensive as long as you have enough leadtime to take advantage of the slow shipping rate. Also, remember you can tweak their templates to add color, change the design a little, change fonts, etc.

Does everyone put their full address on their cards or just URL and email? I've gone to the latter just because I have many websites on my cards and little room for extra info.

The nice thing about Moo cards ( http://www.moo.com/ ) is that each one can be different so you can give the card based on what you think the recipient might be interested in or ask people to choose their favourite. The size is a bit of a talking point too.

Thanks to your suggestion, I've made some cards at Vistaprint - for free! Had to pay $5.55 for shipping and handling. For 250 cards, that's pretty awesome.

They've arrived and look great! Look:

Help a BlogHer newbie out ... what's all this about stickers? Sounds cool -- where do I make them, and what's the most helpful or interesting?

I was on bedrest during the BlogHer conference last year and I want to get the most out of my trip this year!
