When I heard about the massacre at Virgina Tech on Monday, I caught my breath. How could someone shoot over 50 people in such a short span of time? The thought made my head spin. But as I tried to comprehend that horrifying number, an ugly, dark thought came to mind. I wondered if the shooter target only women, as did killers at universities in Montreal and Texas, and in a school in rural Pennsylvania? I'm still waiting to find out, although this seems like much more indiscriminate violence. (To be very clear, I am not saying that random shootings are OK, either.)
Preliminary reports from some sources indicate that the killer began his rampage with a woman he may or may not have had a relationship with, and the resident assistant who came to assist her. Once again, it is a situation in which a jilted paramour turns to violence. We saw this not long ago when a husband killed his wife in a parking lot after she left him. It's a sadly common story.
It's not that the sex of the victims increases or diminishes the horror of this latest incident. If the victims were all or primarily female, though, it does take on a different nuance to me. And again, while I am mortified that anyone was killed, I will feel a sick form of relief if I find out that it was not only women who suffered, who were punished merely for being women. It's a disgusting position to find myself in, and yet, here is where our culture has led me.
