Health Care Choices - Hard Ones

So, you might have heard me mention this before but my significant other has Crohn's Disease. Mostly it's a manageable disease. Inconvenient at times, (Who gets the bathroom first? She does, always!), and downright annoying at others, (What do you mean I need to stop the car? We just left the rest stop 3 miles ago?!). For a good long while, she's done really well taking Imuran to manage the disease. But now, the Imuran, it isn't working.

After trying to ignore what was looking like a Crohn's disease flare I called the GI doctor, (usually referred to as The Dark Lady of Digestion), to make her an appointment. May 31, yikes! A few days later there was no ignoring the flare so TW called the doctor's office herself and that started the ball rolling... downhill... full speed ahead!

Blood work! Stool sample! Steroid enemas! Prednisone! Potassium! B12 injections! The fun never ends around here! The Dark Lady of Digestion knows how to throw a great poop party. Except she also informed us that it's time to try another maintenance drug since the Imuran isn't working.

Remicade or Humira. Those are the choices. And oh what horrible choices they are. Surely there is something else. But no, really there isn't. TW has tried everything else!

So what do you do when you have two choices and neither choice is good? No, it's not that neither choice is good it is that both choices are bad - really, really bad.

Do you think we should just flip a coin? Ugh!

Oh Denise! Such intense injections - real side effects, real risks given the presence of TB in this border state anyhoo.

Question (I'm no doctor, heaven knows, but): the slight differences in potential side effects led me to wonder whether TW's gp and/or obgyn has or could or should weigh in on the choice? I realize that won't likely be FREE, but family history and personal health issues might be a muy importante triangulation?

May the force be with you Jedis. I'm just sorry you all have to deal with this.

The answer is probably yes, but have you considered seeking a 2nd or even 3rd opinion?

My birthmother suffers from Crohn's disease. I am learning more about it all the time, and can only imagine. She doesn't want to drive the 1.5 hours to see me because she's so afraid of a flare up.

I'm wishing you and your partner the very best.

I know people with Crohn's disease -- it's a rough road. I wish you two the best as you negotiate this difficult situation.

I'd send her a hug, but know she does not much care for the offering...

so will instead send good thoughts.

Valid point concerning having the primary care doc weigh in - except the primary care doc is a little clueless sometimes (see my post about needing new primary care doctors!)

Thanks RE! :-)

You're right, Kim, it's a tough road at times.

Andie... I feel your pain and your birth mom's pain. We just drove to Charlotte to see my mom - yes in the middle of this flare TW is dealing with. It went better than I expected it to go, much much better. But it's always scary to attempt long distance travel. Hopefully your birth mom can get her Crohns under control and come for a visit soon! I'll be sending her good bathroom thoughts!

Hello Denise,

Please consider that your partner hasn't tried everything; only conventional medicine offers the best of two bad choices. There are Naturopathic docs out here and we treat Crohn's, successfully, without the use of drugs. It IS possible. It doesn't mean you have to quit whatever drug you're on. But often times it does mean a serious change in lifestyle, i.e. dietary shifts, supplementation, making time for self-care, dealing with the underlying stressors.

I'd love to dialogue with you about any resistance you-or more appropriately-your partner- might have to alternative treatment. I am always open to learning more about why people fear non-conventional medicine.

best,
Dr. Hannah
