SuperBowl Recap: The Game or the Commercials?

I always feel a little "off" from the rest of the female blogger community around SuperBowl time, as I never seem to see any other women bloggers discussing it, whether it's for the actual game itself or for the commercials. I watch it for both, actually. While NFL isn't my favorite thing (I prefer college football), I always make a point to watch the Superbowl, even if I don't care about the teams, like this year.
The commercials weren't all that spectacular this year, either. While there were a few stand-outs, in particular Dove's Real Beauty campaign. Now I have found some great breakdowns of this, in particular Kate McHugh's Random Marketing Thoughts. She points out that they were pushing the timing on showing this commercial, as late in the second half quarter usually doesn't bode well for the women's demographic when watching the Superbowl.

On a "it's just funny" note, I loved the McGuyver Mastercard commercial, and I always love seeing my favorite Muppet Kermit the Frog hawking a "Green" hybrid car.

What did y'all think of the Superbowl and its commercials? Which ones were stand-outs to you?

Here's a link to all of the Superbowl commercials from Google Video.

Ah, and I just noticed one of my favorite bloggers, Angry Black Bitch ( http://angryblackbitch.blogspot.com/2006/02/keep-l... ), writing about her super bowl weekend! Queso and flannel PJs! She's so funny.

I wasn't much interested in watching, since I care for neither team. But the night before we had dinner with a rabid (female) Steelers fan, so the S.O. and I watched the second half. He knows nothing about football, whereas I have followed it quite closely, especially during the Niners golden years.

It was kinda fun being the one to explain to him the concepts of down by contact, holding, two-point conversions and the like. Although I did start to wonder if he was going to feel like less of a man!!! LOL

I blogged it a little while watching it. I also enjoy talking to people who Know Everything About Something, so it was cool to be in a room full of people who could explain that the ball has to be totally over the touchdown line, or that they have to catch it with both feet in the zone...

Is it just me or was there way, way less hugging and guy-guy butt patting than in previous years? It was like they were avoiding showing it on camera on purpose, and that sucks! It's my favorite part of football!

That Google list isnt' the complete list of commercials. The complete list can be found at AOL Sports ( http://sports.aol.com/nfl/superbowlads ) in order and by the quarter. And it shows what I remember, that the Dove commercial happened in the 2nd quarter, when the game was boring, not the second half.

The commercials this year were uninspired. Don't know a thing about Go Daddy.com except that I won't go there. Was surprised to see so many for Disney, until I remembered it was thier channel doing the broadcasting.

I liked the idea of the MacGyver ad, but how sad that they had to go back 20 years for advertising inspiration. (unless it was an ad to appeal to us older folks?)

We are always required to watch the Super Bowl, for the commercials. It's a TW rule. This year we left Atlanta early in order to get home in time for the Super Bowl and then we ended up not watching more than one quarter and the half time show. So forgive me, I haven't seen most of the commercials.

I did go look at the Toyota "For your future" commercial because TW told me it bugged her and I wanted to see if it bugged me. It did. I'd like to know what the hispanic folks think about this one.

While I understand and agree that learning English can be helpful for your child's future, if your primary language is something other than English - it just seemed sort of "America's streets are paved in gold"...
