Dressing the post-partum body
by Susan Wagner

Dear Susan,

My sister-in-law is getting married in mid-October. The wedding will be held on a cruise ship and the overall vibe will be fairly casual. (I'd probably call it semi-formal, and I KNOW no one will be wearing tuxedos.) This is a second wedding for my sister-in-law, and a fairly small affair.

Now, here's my problem. At the time of the wedding I will be 5 WEEKS POSTPARTUM. I have NO IDEA what I am going to wear. I am not a member of the wedding party, but as a member of the "immediate" family I want to look good. I know I'm still going to have a belly pooch. Should I wear a ... sigh... maternity dress? I don't think I can get a dress in my pre-pregnant size, so what size? What type of style would flatter my jiggly belly and big nursing breasts? (Also a style that would be nursing-friendly would be extremely helpful!) I'd like to try to stay under about $150 for the dress. Is there any help or advice you could offer? I am at a loss.

Thank you so much.
Rebecca

wrap nursing dressLet's get this out of the way right now: Rebecca should NOT wear a maternity dress to this wedding. Maternity clothes, particularly dresses and skirts, only fit correctly when there is an actual baby inside to hold the front in place. Even though a squishy, post-baby tummy often feels like it's the same size it was before the baby came out, the clothes won't drape properly and Rebecca will look like she's wearing an ill-fitting tent. Instead, Rebecca wants to choose an outfit that will both flatter her post-baby body AND be comfortable and easy to nurse in. It would also be nice if she could find something that she will be able to wear more than once.

Rebecca should look for a dress designed specifically for nursing mothers; this will be the most practical and comfortable option for her, particularly since at five weeks, she and her baby may still be working on getting their nursing groove going. One good option is a wrap dress; the one pictured above, from Motherwear, comes with a discreet underlayer with nursing openings. A wrap dress is a flattering choice for women with a little extra in the tummy; the V neck and the diagonal line of the wrap distracts from the mid section. This is also a dress that Rebecca could dress up for the wedding (with pretty sandals and a necklace) or dress down for daytime (with ballet flats and a jean jacket). Right now it is on sale for $55.00.

oxford stripe nursing dressRebecca could also opt for a dress with an A-line shape, which would support her breasts and skim past her tummy and hips. The dress pictured here is a slightly younger look than the wrap dress; it is a blue and white oxford stripe with eyelet trim. The hemline is also a little shorter. I like the soft, feminine look of this dress; like the wrap dress, I think Rebecca could easily wear it again, although maybe not for every day. Dress from Motherwear, currently on sale for $50.00.

A third option is a slip dress; the one pictured below, from Glamourmom, is a cotton/elastane blend and has adjustable straps and a built-in nursing bra. A dress like this is classic and beautiful, but may be better for smaller-breasted girls. Rebecca could top the dress with a light-weight cardigan or shawl. Again, this is a piece that she can wear for the wedding AND after. The slip dress is $49.00 and comes in black and ruby red.

nursing slipdressRebecca asked about what size to buy, and honestly, this is the toughest part of her question because it is impossible right now to predict what size she will be wearing five weeks out from her delivery. I would not suggest she buy anything just yet; instead, she should keep her eyes open for dresses that appeal to her. None of the dresses pictured here are terribly expensive; all will be under $75.00, even with the shipping.

So when should Rebecca actually shop? I would say that about two weeks after the baby is born (when she's really tired and hormonal!) Rebecca will be able to make a good guess at what size she needs. I would encourage her to order more than one dress, and in more than one size--go one size larger AND one size smaller than what she thinks she will need. If she's actually going to GO to the store and try things on, do the same (but really, it will be easier to order on line and try things on at home, when the baby is sleeping or being loved on by another responsible adult).

I agree 100%...don't wear maternity.

All of these ideas are great, I would add one thing; they have some great "suck-you-in" undergarments these days...I think they say you can drop a whole dress size with some of them. I'm not sure how comfortable one would be so soon after having a baby, but it's something to keep in mind.

good idea!

At least one of the sites linked here (I think the last one, Glamourmom) has the "shaper" undergarments. I had completely forgotten about those!

Thanks, Catherine!

Somewhat off topic...

Somewhat off topic...I'm 13 years postpartum, but I really like the style of the wrap dress you picture in the post. What body type works best with a wrap dress? Do you need to be taller and leaner, or can you be shorter and rounder?

ooooh, the wrap dress!

Catherine, wrap dresses are fabulous because virtually anyone can wear them. They look best on women with curvier figures; the wrap calls attention to that hourglass shape. Very flat chested women (like me, sadly) want to look for a wrap with some shirring or perhaps a ruffle across the neckline, something to create a little bit of bust.

Perhaps we need a post on the wrap dress. Do you think?

I would love a post about the wrap dress!

I would love it if you did a post on the wrap dress! I've been wanting to get one for a while now, but am not completely sure if the style would be good for me. But, if you say an "hourglass" shape can carry it off...then I would love to know more...stripes, prints, solids???? What is best for; not tall, needs to lose a few pounds, hourglass shape...oh, and on a budget? And, what if I did lose ten pounds after buying it...Would it still fit since it is a wrap?

Also...Would a wrap dress be good for the big BlogHer Conference in July? It's my first time, so I'm not sure what to wear. I can use all the help I can get.

Thanks so much.

Susan is a lifesaver

We're already invited to a wedding in October, just 4 weeks after our baby is due. I am bookmarking this post immediately. The particular dresses may be different, but the advice is priceless.

Thanks, Skye!

Can I make one more suggestion? Start looking now at dresses, and bookmark anything that looks good; in the weeks after the baby, you may not have the time or energy to scour the Internet for The Dress.

Also, I found that after I gave birth I pretty much lost my will to get dressed for the first few weeks. So plan ahead, while you're still cheerful and (sort of) rested.

And then e-mail me and tell me what you bought! Please.

Don't Worry...

Lucky for you, baby doll dresses are in this season! You've got an adorable Mia Farrow pixie cut and beautful facial bone structure. The 1960's styles that are in right now would go perfect with the look you are sporting in your photo!

The Golden Road Dress in the latest Anthropologie catalogue (view link below) offers a great solution. The dress is in a metallic linen--a little dressy, but great for breezy days. Offers an elastic empire waist with a baby doll shape. Comes in S,M,L,XL so you can predetermine your size and the elastic and A-line shape will be forgiving. It's a little low cut and easy for breast feeding (perhaps) as well as offer some visual interest. And the dress is somewhat short to keep it casual and cool. The sleeves help balance out any hips/belly you may be concerned with post-partum and offer some modesty (and when the wind blows, no need to carry a sweater!)

Jersey is also a great fabric to look into, it moves with you, keeps you cool, it's comfortable, and you can wear it all year round. The link above offers some alternative styles as well.

Hope this helps. Congratulations on the baby and Have fun on the cruise!

Oh!

Spanx are great and comfortable and breathe...these help suck things in.

Everyone in the world should have them. You can even get them off eBay. They offer them in nylons with feet, nylons without feet, and little biker shorts for undies.

Have you tried Majamas?

They offer some cute empire waist jersey dresses (check out The Koi Dress) like previous posters have suggested, but they are all specifically designed for nursing moms (and the post-partum belly). I live near their store in Oak Park, IL, so I might be a little biased, but I had amazing luck with their clothes the first time around and I'll be shopping there again after this baby pops out.

Excellent!

Thanks for the heads up about Majamas--they quite honestly have the best looking nursing tops I've seen anywhere (why are nursing tops so frumpy? what is that all about?).

Majamas

Majamas are really nice because they are so stretchy and soft.

I've gotten a few at TummyStyle.com. They have a really good selection of Majamas for those of us not in Oak Park!

The other nice thing about Majamas is that they have a really large selection of nursing tops and dresses which are hard to find.

Onehotmama.com

Run, do not walk (ok, well, type as fast as you can) - and get yourself over to Onehotmama.com They have an AWESOME selection of nursing and postpatrum friendly clothing; they carry Majamas and many other well known labels. They have GREAT customer service and an awesome discussion board. I should know, I started hanging out there when I was preggo with #4 and he's now 7 with two younger sisters. I've bought tons and tons of stuff from them, including three dresses to wear to weddings. They also sell Spanx. Good luck - weddings are a BLAST!

I can't spell

And obviously, spell check for "postpartum" would have been helpful. The kids are sucking my brains dry.
