Barrack Obama has 81,114 supporters on Facebook. He also has hired Facebook founder Chris Hughes.
Facebook launched Facebook Platform a few days ago which makes third party applications available for your Facebook profile. These apps range from Causes to Twitter to Obama '08. The Institute for Politics Democracy & the Internet Blog
said that the Obama Facebook app took Facebook campaigning to the next level...I would agree.
By using the Obama app, your Facebook profile features campaign videos and news. It also tells you which of your Facebook friends are in states where there is something going on...
Reach Out to Your Friends You have 2 friends in early states.

There is also an opportunity to sign up for email and a campaign news feed. Facebook is made up of networks that are local. Local? Yes local is important for national campaigns.
As Jill/txt notes, " I had no idea I had a friend in an early state."
This Facebook app leverages the influence of friends on a local level. You used to have to come to my house to see my lawn sign or park behind me in my driveway to see my bumper sticker....now you just have to be visit my Facebook profile; stay awhile and catch the video "Meet Michele." Yes, this is a new level...one giant step forward for social media in the campaign.

Rare Thing
It's a rare thing indeed, don't you think, for a modern day politician to know about the uses of modern day technology well enough to be innovative. I've been reading Mr. Obama's blog and listening to his podcasts for a year or so now. Admirably, the content written or spoken seemed to come from him and not some large group of political consultants, though obviously they’ve got to be there.
He is the only politician I know of, to date, that uses these media to explain his thoughts on matters and to create discussion and not just to present his party's rhetoric. Not to say I am against party rhetoric, there's a place for everything, but not in a blog or podcast.
How would you compare how Edwards and Clinton are using social media in comparison to Obama? How is Richards doing about building a social network?

Clinton, Obama and Edwards and social media
In my opinion, John Edwards gets it and uses it, even when someone else is using social media on his behalf; Clinton gets that she needs it but doesn't get it....and the problem with that, is that because she doesn't get it, she is not directing those speaking on her behalf.
