I had planned to take in Once this afternoon, but after my scheduling got derailed, I found myself sitting in a small theater, waiting for Waitress to start. I hadn’t seen any reviews of Waitress, but the theater manager said I’d like it. With that glowing recommendation, and nothing else up for an hour, I bought my ticket.
From the opening moments, with pie after luscious pie being baked, I was rapt…and drooling. Jenna is an accomplished baker, and finds bliss in pie production. I understood the peaceful, smiling look on Jenna’s face as she stirred chocolate. I’ve got a terrible sweet tooth, and baking is something that soothes my soul. The creative process and the assembly brings order and satisfaction to a day when nothing else is proceeding as planned.
Keri Russell is luminous in the role of Jenna, a small-town waitress who is unexpectedly pregnant, unhappily married, and unlucky in her pursuit of a better life for herself. When a surprise romance puts a spring in her step, she finds she has some fight in her after all.
After watching so many big-budget, fantasy-based character movies recently, I was charmed and unexpectedly moved by the very small, very human stories in Waitress. The humor was subtle but ever present, like all the emotions in this little gem of a film.
Nathan Fillion, who plays Dr. Pomatter, was the perfect foil to Jenna’s control-freak husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto.) The only problem was I kept looking at him and thinking he played Ethan on Lost. Nope, different guy, similar look. Actually, Nathan Fillion was on Lost for one episode, so maybe I’ve got awesome recall. Yes, let’s go with that.
From the crotchety old business owner whose gruff exterior hides a soft heart, to the sisterly coworkers who support Jenna without judging her, these characters are all familiar. Yet the choices that each character makes, and the reactions of the others feel genuine and pure. The entire cast was fantastic, and the story well executed. I enjoyed every minute of this film.
