I’ve been devouring historical novels the last few months. I’ve plowed my way through I, Elizabeth by Rosalind Miles, as well as an embarrassing number of Philippa Gregory’s Tudor England confections
.

Of Philippa Gregory’s novels, I really enjoyed The Other Boleyn Girl. Apparently, it is totally historically inaccurate, but I say pish! Pish-posh! Who cares! I’m eagerly awaiting the December release of the movie version, which will star Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman as the Boleyn sisters.
Anyway, after reading through all these accounts of the wild lives and loves of England’s royalty, I decided to check out Shekhar Kapur’s Oscar-winning film, Elizabeth.
I have seen snippets of it over the years, but never the entire movie. Cate Blanchett is so well-known now, I didn’t realize that this was her breakout role. She was absolutely incredible in her portrayal of the young Elizabeth.
With her life in constant danger, and rivals lining up to knock her off her rightful throne, Elizabeth used both her charm and iron-clad resolve to protect her reign and restore England to might. In gaining absolute power, Elizabeth had to sacrifice her own happiness. I was especially moved by Elizabeth’s dawning understanding that her life no longer was her own, and how she gave herself over to her people.
If you haven’t seen Elizabeth yet, I highly recommend it. If you’ve seen other flicks about the Tudors, let me know. I’d love some recommendations!
