Things I hate to shop for:

1. Bras.

2. Bathing suits.

3. Jeans.

I think this list is, for the most part, universal. But now, with the help of some savvy readers, I have found a way to take #3 off the list forever! Or at least make it less of a pain in the . . .

Yes.

A little while back, our own very smart Debra Roby turned me on to True Jeans ("matches you to designer jeans that fit your unique body shape and measurements"). How does it work, you ask? You follow the "3 easy steps," which consist of measuring yourself, choosing a style preference, and then ordering jeans from the list they provide. The site includes clear directions for measuring AND a "Style Tips" section that made me drool.

Awesome.

Need jeans AND a bra? Zafu has you covered. Answer a few simple questions and voila! Zafu finds your jeans! And then they will do it for bras, too. Zafu recently started carrying plus sizes, which means that no matter what size you are, Zafu's got your . . . yes. (Thanks to Friday Style reader Kate for the heads up.)

This is so much easier than hauling all those jeans into the dressing room. And I suspect you will do significantly less swearing. Or is that just me?

Susan Wagner writes about fashion at Friday Style and everything else at Friday Playdate. Today she is wearing capri pants from J. Crew that she owns in two colors. She is thinking about buying them in a third color because they fit SO well.

Well, since I'm a glutton for punishment, I went to www.truejeans.com ( http://www.blogher.com/www.truejeans.com ).

I cringed as I measured my post-baby "voluptuousness" and I entered my stats. As I waited for my jeans to come up, I just knew that I wasn't going to find a thing that I liked. I was wrong!

While there were a couple of expensive brands ($250 range), I had several $60-70 jobbers. I'm totally willing to pay that for a pair of jeans that actually fit.
Thanks for the site!

Hi Susan! My name is Kristen and I work as a content manager at www.truejeans.com ( http://www.truejeans.com ). I wanted to thank you for mentioning True Jeans in your blog. I also wanted to let you know that we will be launching three new plus size brands in early July. It is an exciting to finally be expanding to serve more women who are in search of the perfect pair of jeans.

Because it's hard to get jeans that make a normal womanly figure look good I look after carefully ones that I do get I only wear then when I'm out and take care how I wash them. So in the house I wear pj bottoms or track pants - jeans are for winter so that's fine.

I think there is a lot of money for a business who designs jeans to complement womanly figures at a good price because there is the demand for it.

Summer is sorted with dresses, skirts and some shorts (although most shorts should simply be recycled into something else as I think some gremlins have designed most shorts to make peole look bulky and sad). I only wear shorts for walking/running and yoga.

I stay clear of chinos fairly much as it isn't so easy to find flattering designs in them - I don't have a figure that suits narrow legs like skinny jeans or any tapered pants like many chino designs. I need to balance my hips. I did get a couple pairs of trouser pants style last week for more business occassions that could also work for smart casual. The legs have to be taken up but that's normal, I'm 5' 2" so all pants have to be taken up.

I liked the line about the price of a tank of petrol vs the price of jeans. You must be wise and have a fuel efficient car and not one of those money guzzling SUV's. :)

You all are putting your fingers RIGHT on why jeans makes my list of Things I Hate to Shop For: there's nothing wrong with ANY of our figures (yours or mine) but finding jeans that fit is like looking for the Holy Grail. I think I probably take better care of my jeans than I do any other piece of clothing in my wardrobe, because it was such a hassle to find EXACTLY what I wanted (and really, of the six pairs of jeans I currently, own, only two are EXACTLY what I wanted).

So tell me this: what do you all wear INSTEAD of jeans? I wear a lot of chinos, because I have more success finding cotton or cotton blend pants that fit; I also wear skirts, for the same reason.

I was recently directed to that site by a friend and upon entering my measurements all True Jeans listed for me were capris. I had to add 3 inches to my inseam to get non-capri jeans offered to me. This means anything I buy from them has to be hemmed. With the variety they stock can't they offer a few petite/short lengths? Ugh.

I find a lot of my "trendy" jeans in the juniors dept. I know, I'm far to old to shop in the same part of the store as fourteen year olds (Stacy London is cringing right now), but if you want to try a trend and not spend a lot of money, it's not bad. You will, however, go up at least one or two sizes. I'm a 4 in misses, but can go as high as a 9 in juniors.

A lot of the junior jeans have some stretch in them, too, which is good.

I tried Zafu last year and they told me to look for "womanly" jeans. Now, this did not make me happy. You write "And then, if the number bothers you, rip out the tag. A good fit is more important than a number in the waistband" but when it comes to buying jeans we want to rock it like a 70's Cheryl Tiegs type, not like our moms...

needless to say, I didnt buy jeans at Zafu.com. I went out to Rock and Republic, spent $200 on jeans that give me such bad muffintop I can't ever wear them. I am an idiot.

Oh Susan! Can you help with this?? I used to buy Land's end but they don't give the girls the support they need. I emailed Land's end saying they should carry suits in bra sizes. They did very nicely email me back and suggest some sites but they were all plus size sites. but, just because there's a G after my bra size does not mean I'm a plus size. Every piece of plus size clothing I've tried on has fit me like a tent. Do you or any one else have suggestions for this? I've checked figleaves and they don't seem to carry a ton of tankini's in my size (I refuse an actual bikini, I don't want to do that many situps and as an apple, I always carry a little weight there anyway).

I am entirely sympathetic to not wanting to spend $200 on jeans--I won't do it either because they're JEANS for heaven's sake, and while you shouldn't wear jeans that don't fit properly, you SHOULD be able to get them for a reasonable amount of money--say, the equivalent of a tank of gas.

When I did the full deal at True Jeans, I got a range of options, everything from $200 to under $50.00. I assumed the finder would work the same way no matter what your size and shape.

Kathy, you've hit the secret of skinny jeans: size up. And then, if the number bothers you, rip out the tag. A good fit is more important than a number in the waistband.

Susan, I wish I had the inclination to spend $200 on jeans, because this method sounds awesome for all of us who feel trudging around a mall is roughly equivalent to the Bataan Death March! It just might be worth it.

I hate bathing suit shopping, too! But I just had a great online experience with Lands' End. I wrrote about it here ( http://hormonecoloreddays.blogspot.com/2007/06/swi... ). The suit should arrive next week. I hope it's a perfect fit.

Some of those jeans were in the $100 or more range. I'll be sticking to Levis.

Speaking of which, I finally bought a pair of "skinny" jeans. They were surprisingly flattering and nothing like the acid-washed, zippered-ankle monstrosities I wore in 1987. I did have to go up a size, though.
