“Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”- The Queen, in Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

While Lewis Carroll’s Queen in Through the Looking Glass “believed” her six impossible things before breakfast, this Queen has done them. In the virtual world of Second Life anything is possible. It’s possible to fly, it’s possible to visit far off lands, and it’s possible to bring hundreds of BlogHers to the Chicago conference without ever leaving their homes.

I’m Queen Tureaud. It’s a Second Life avatar name. You may know me as BlogHer Contributing editor Erin Kotecki Vest of Queen of Spain blog. For those of you who can’t make it to the BlogHer ’07 conference in Chicago, I’ve teamed up with Elisa, Lisa, and Jory to bring Chicago to you.

BlogHer in Second Life will offer the opportunity to experience the Chicago conference live on a virtual platform, complete with general sessions, audio feeds, and even a virtual cocktail party! Similar to BlogHer ‘07 in Chicago, the BlogHer Second Life virtual conference will feature an interactive format designed to inspire discussion. Not to mention FREE virtual goodies from our sponsors and vendors!

So how does it work?

First thing is first, if you want to attend the virtual conference you will need to download and install Second Life. Unfortunately it will not run on all computers, so check Second Life system requirements at https://secure-web7.secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php . A basic account at Second Life is free.

Next, you will need to register for the conference. Registration can be completed at http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaID=137268. Registration is free.

Now you are ready to get comfortable in this virtual world, and Queen Tureaud is happy to be your guide. I will be holding Second Life training and office hours to get you ready for the conference.

Queen Tureaud office hours:(PST)
Monday 10-2pm
Wednesday 10-2pm
Thursday 5pm-8pm
Sunday 4-7pm

You can email me at queenofspainblog@yahoo.com, or you can instant message me while IN Second Life by using “search” on the bottom of your tool bar and searching for “Queen Tureaud.” Click on “Queen Tureaud” to pull up my profile and send me an “instant message” telling me who you are and that you are a BlogHer. I will then work with you and hold your hand in the sometimes complicated but always fun virtual world.

You can also take advantage of Second Life tutorials to get you started. These “resident” made video tutorials can be found at http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Video_Tutorials .

BlogHer in Second Life will be a “PG” event. This means those of you wishing to explore some of the more adult oriented spaces will have to do that on your own, and it will be expected that you adhere to these policies while attending any BlogHer events in Second Life.

I will be posting here at BlogHer.org with tips, tricks, and ideas to get you ready for the virtual conference.

Hope to “see” you there!

I have been meaning to submit a post to thank you for sharing the details on this previous virtual conference. This is one of the posts that got me interested in exploring the world of Second Life and virtual conferences in general. Since then, we've been playing around with having our own team meetings using virtual conferences for Second Life at work. I have found it to be far more entertaining to have virtual conferences using the new Crowne Plaza Conference Center that is currently free to use in Second Life. This is more entertaining than using Glance, GoToMeeting, or WebEx.

I think is really cool that you can use audio chat and even Powerpoint Presentations in the virtual meetings. I'm sure we will start seeing more of such conference centers pop up in Second Life. In any event, if anyone wants more information on how to set up virtual conferencing in Second Life, you can check out the article that I bought that saved me a lot of time in figuring out the setup myself: Second Life virtual conferencing ( http://www.innoventum.com/secondlifevirtualconfere... )

The SecondLlife during this day doesn´t permit creat an account free!

They say:
«They Linden Lab reserves the right to limit the number of Second Life accounts an individual may have!«

I can´t follow conference yet, from Lisbon!!!

I was bummed to have to miss yet another BlogHer event, but the travel just wasn't feasible for me. I'll be thrilled to participate in Second Life.

FYI, there is already a lot of good stuff going on in there. For example, I co-facilitate a weekly meetup for the SL Netroots group at RootsCamp on Progressive Island. There are also a lot of nonprofit orgs with offices on Commonwealth Island and in the Nonprofit Commons. There's even a Code Pink chapter in SL!

So come on in, sisters. The water's fine.

(PS: My name in SL is Ruby Glitter.)

Great idea. I'm all registered.

Sitting around tables in San Jose blogging and IMing was like being in Second Life last year anyway.

This is so, so awesome! I just found out I can't go to the conference (but I am giving away my registration pass this week) and this will be a great way to experience a bit of it virtually! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you for doing this for the SL'ers who can participate. I have enough trouble with my Primary Life so I've never dipped into SL.

I'm afraid that if I started using SL I won't stop. I'd never see actual daylight again.

From the thought to the word to the deed. BlogHer women get it done. Wow!

Sounds like a great opportunity. I'm a bit hesitant about SL due to pop-ups, spyware, yadayada. What's your advice on that?

Thanks.

Queen Tureaud 5 pts

Hi everyone,

I can honestly say I have had NO issues with popups, spyware, or any of the above due to Second life. Not one.

And I KNOW it looks a bit complicated at first...but that's why I'm here! I promise to hold your hand until you are flying around and shopping like a pro!

Office hours are coming up today! Get on and let's explore!

DanaFiles 5 pts

Queen Tureaud, you are going to be one busy lady at Virtual BlogHer! What a great idea!

Lexie 5 pts

I figured you wouldn't recommend something with junk on it, but had to ask. I'll be working on making time to explore SL pre-conference and enjoy the conference via SL.

Thanks.

I'm a huge Second Life fan and one of my blogs is based around it. I personally have never had any issues with spyware, pop ups or any other security risks. I'd be happy to help answer questions about Second Life too!

Kim Pearson 5 pts

Also glad to help! (And no, pop-ups and spyware haven't been an issue.

But if you are concerned about having the viewer on your hard drive, I know a lot of people who just download it to a flash drive.

The only tech issue that comes up with SL is that it is frequently updated, but that is a minor inconvenience.

Or maybe I will. So I can protect the others. ;)

Anyway, another female Second Life avie coming to the conference in-world and willing to help out when needed. I neither had any problems with the spyware, pop ups, ... but I do suggest you try to create an avatar before the contest and give it some decent looks. If needed any help with that, just IM (instant message ;)) 'Vint Falken' in-world (in Second Life).
