Eat Your Tea: Matcha
by Kalyn Denny

Food and drink trends come and go, but one trend that seems to be staying around is the popularity of matcha, a type of powdered Japanese green tea. Because matcha leaves are mixed with hot water and then consumed, matcha tea reportedly has more antioxidant benefits than other types of tea. Another way to get the antioxidants in matcha tea is by using it in food, and desserts using matcha are nutritious, delicious, and are increasingly being spotted on food blogs. (And, yes, most of these Matcha creations are green. Be sure to check out the beautiful photos.)

One of the most famous cupcake blogs is Cupcake Bakeshop, where blogger Chockylit made Green Tea Bubble Cream Filled CupCakes with Green Tea Cream Cheese Frosting. That's a double dose of matcha benefits, in a cupcake!

Anh of Food Lover's Journey used Chockylit's frosting recipe with her own matcha creation for gorgeous Green Tea Cupcakes.

More cupcakes at Vanilla Garlic where Garrett makes Chocolate Cupcakes with Matcha Ice Cream and Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

Amy makes Green Tea Cheesecake White Chocolate Brownies at Nook and Pantry, and then she followed a reader's suggestion and made Green Tea Truffles.

At Coconut and Lime, Rachel makes Matcha Green Tea Angel Food Cake, with a cake recipe that uses only egg whites so it's healthier than most cakes.

Finally, Matcha White Chocolate Ice Cream is paired with Kumquat Pound Cake at Kuiadore, where Jocelyn has beautiful photographs of both desserts.

I 'discovered' matcha last

I 'discovered' matcha last year, and now love its subtle bitterness in cakes. I've made a matcha loaf quite a few times, as well as matcha & chocolate truffles. Matcha madeleines will be on my list next, as well as matcha panna cotta.
Thanks for all those extra recipe links, Kalyn!

I blog about food over at Nami-nami

I love the sound of it

Hi Pille,
As you know, I'm not a big sugar eater, but now that I've started experimenting with agave nectar, I'm thinking you could make a dessert with matcha and agave that would be super healthy!
