Hey, Baby, It's the 4th of July

So sings the band X in their song "4th of July." Although it is not the kind of patriotic music one thinks of for celebrating Independence Day, I listen to it every year. I'm also a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen who has several songs perfect for July 4th including "Independence Day," (lyrics, audio) "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)" (lyrics, video) and his cover of Woodie Guthrie's folk classic "This Land is Your Land" which Springsteen calls "The greatest song ever written about America."

I'm not the only person who finds a connection between Springsteen's music and American themes. In an essay titled "Independence Day, Apart From the Fireworks," James D. Bloom writes that "the national holiday in classic American literature sometimes takes on an ironic or shadowed cast." About Springsteen he writes:

Against the Independence Day backdrop that Springsteen painstakingly renders, such an announcement not only bespeaks the singer's loss of innocence; it also alludes to our entrenched confidence that we can belong, friction-free, to an indivisible America while pursuing our dreams...

The U.S. State Department found Bloom's essay including his extended meditation on Springsteen's lyrics among other literary depictions of Independence Day sufficiently representative of "U.S. Life, Culture and History" to post it on their web site. For reals.

What other music are bloggers and writers recommending for the holiday?

Tim Page at the Washington Post notes that "amid a burst of fireworks and pride, holiday music, alas, often fizzles."

Spencer at arubberdoor offers a "random ten" of July 4th music starting with "Metal Firecracker" by Lucinda Williams

Seattle radio station KEXP announces on their blog that they will offer their annual special "Soul Freedom." Check the blog for some video previews and a recipe for vodka infused watermelon.

Fred Soto at White Houser offers videos of patriotic songs and peace activists to celebrate the fourth

Timothy Sandefur at Positive Liberty offers music, a movie, food, something to read and someplace to visit if you're looking for ideas on how to observe the holiday

Sean Daly of the St. Petersburg Times shares his "patriotic iPod" on his blog Pop Life

On the Music Industry Newswire, Scott G spills the "surprising secrets of patriotic songs"

So BlogHers - what are your favorite musical ways to celebrate the 4th. And, as you can see, my list is BlogHim heavy. Do you have any recommendations for BlogHers with their holiday music suggestions? Please point us in their direction in the comments. Thanks!

Thank you so much for your kind words, Amy. I know a thing or two about not having as much time to comment as I'd like due to other pressing demands.

I have to say your 4th of July karaoke celebration sounds like a blast!

Loved your music post Maria, particularly since our 4th of July festivities for our funky little island here include KARAOKE of all things.

Families love participating, and it's a great way to integrate some of the celebratory songs that have fallen by the wayside since our days of 'pledging allegiance to the flag' and singing America The Beautiful in public schools.

We always end the day (rock & roll, patriot faves whatevah) with a salute to the Star Spangled Banner and lowering of the flag...and yes, everyone gets out of the pool long enough to sing it. ;-)

Though I'm a huge fan of BlogHer I haven't popped comments into blogs to participate as much as I should due to cramped timing of our nonprofit's official launch at year's end, (we've been running programs for 2 yrs. already tho!) That said, I found you via Denise when she linked to our mini-media round-up of 4th of July faves at Shaping Youth here: http://www.shapingyouth.org/blog/?p=524

We also covered the international independence day celebrations here:

I added your link (and hers) to the comments section of our blog, but will start paying more attention to my BlogHer media mavens who are a wealth of information!

Hope you had a sparkling 4th---Amy Jussel, Founder/Exec. Dir., www.ShapingYouth.org ( http://www.ShapingYouth.org )

Thanks for the links! And I love your choice of favorite patriotic song...

I like this country she’s like a whore
Who loves her junkies
Who loves all her sad outlaws
Lifts up her skirt to tease and flirt
With the wretched who have washed up at her shores

When we die i hope someone’s god
Takes us in like immigrants
And we’ll make love in the leftover light
Of heaven’s tenements

X's shifting lineup and Dave Alvin and the Knitters are all perfectly appropriate topics for the discussion as far as I'm concerned!

I've seen X, their off shoots and solo acts many, many times. I saw them reunited with Billy Zoom in Philly a few years back and my goodness were they still awesome. Exene Cervenka ( http://www.exenecervenka.com/ ) at nearly 50 could certainly teach many young up-and-coming singers about how to rock. And John Doe is still dreamy. Always will be.

Thanks for the additional suggestions!

I absolutely love "4th of July." I recently heard Dave Alvin's orginal version, and I still like X's better. I saw them a few years ago, as the Knitters -- which is basically X with Alvin on guitar and more twang, less punk.

Sorry to veer off topic a bit. Generally, I don't like my music and my politics to mix. Galaxie 500 also has a song called "4th of July." How about "American Flag" by Cat Power?
