Tip: Lure People In

I really do try to visit everyone who comes to BlogHer and introduces themselves - or asks people to come and visit their blogs. Sometimes I'm really really busy so I miss a few. I do have a little bit of advice that might help you get a bit more traffic. Here's what happened yesterday...

I was meandering along BlogHer, using the "recent activity" log, clicking into anything new that had appeared since my last visit. I had a few links open to new folks who I intended to visit. Some, I did click into. Others, I didn't and have saved in an Evernote tab to visit when I have some free time.

One of the blogs got an immediate click because the blog description lured me in hard, and fast. Here's a link to Saviabella and a little snippet of the description:

Saviabella's secret powers (which this biographer cannot mention, on the grounds that they would no longer be secret, but let me assure you, they are impressive) are held in check by a red and black beaded brassiere she lifted from the slumbering form of a belly-dancing Amazon while on vacation in the Andes.

That, my dear friends, is a great way to lure me in. I just had to see what kind of woman this was and what her blog was like. I clicked and what did I find? A post that made me laugh so hard and for so long that I had to comment and subscribe, immediately: F*** this job (profanity heavy post)

I love my job.

No, that doesn't really do it justice.

I really, really love my job.

Still not good enough.

I want to make love to my job.

Getting closer, but not quite right.

I want to ...

Not only did that awesome blog description lure me in, the very first post lured me into commenting and subscribing.

How do you lure people into your blog for the first time? Go take a peek at your blogroll entry on BlogHer and on blog directory sites where you've listed your blog. Does your description lure people in? Mine does not...and I need to fix that.

I am always discovering new people based on their interesting introductions so I need to work on mine. I noticed that there are new profile questions here on BlogHer.

Most excellent idea. I'm going to edit mine right away! Thanks for the tip.

laughs and epiphanies?

Love the dress you're wearing in your photo! I'm on my way to visit your blog now. :-)

Edited to add: I just discovered you do not have RSS for your blog. Is there any chance you will add it in the future? I enjoyed reading the three posts I just clicked into but it will be hard for me to remember to visit you if I can't subscribe to your blog via RSS...

Feed

July 11, 2007 - 7:55am

About the dress, thanks! That's one of the photos from my wedding and I have to say I loved the gown myself.

About the feed, unfortunately since I used a template to design my site I don't have an RSS feed and I can't create one because I can't edit the code. (Total pain in the A, but we have some non-technical people writing and this was the easiest way for them all to post.) However, at the very bottom is a box with a link to our FeedBlitz subscription service, which will allow you to subscribe. Maybe I'll move that back to the top. Again, thanks for the insight!

Feedblitz is fine

I'm not sure why I missed the feedblitz link on my first visit. I'm heading back to subscribe. :-)

This is an excellent tip. I

This is an excellent tip. I guess what I need to work on is figuring out what precisely my blog is about. I get good feedback from those who visit, but I'm not really good at the "describy" part.

Miss Grace's Disgrace

What is it about?

July 11, 2007 - 3:15am

That's why I was drawn into that particular blog description - it wasn't about the blog, it was about the woman - and it was storytelling.

If you don't really know what your blog is about, then write a tiny short story about yourself. Something with some kick to it or something surprising or unusual or something that tugs at the heartstrings.

(I like the name of your blog, that's a good start - write a fictional story of Miss Grace's Disgrace? A choose your own disgrace type format, that would be unusual and lure people in...)

Same here

Mine is forever evolving -- maybe I should have included that in my description.

I used to, back in my inchoate web days, write the craziest profile pages. I think there may be an old Yahoo me somewhere claiming to be a retired rodeo clown.

Many years ago, I was a notorious profile stealer (ok borrower). If you had a good profile, I would adopt it as my own - all in good fun of course and just temporarily. :-)
