July is Restless Leg Syndrome Month
by Catherine Morgan

July is RLS Awareness Month...RLS is (Restless Leg Syndrome), and the Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation is a site dedicated to this condition where you can find many links, online support, and up to date information on RLS.

So, why do people have Restless Leg Syndrome? Is it all in their head? It turns out that Restless Leg Syndrome is genetic, and it can cause additional medical problems, not just restless legs.

Restless Leg Syndrome is Real

ATLANTA - Scientists have linked certain genes to restless legs syndrome, suggesting the twitching condition described as "jimmy legs" in a "Seinfeld" episode is biologically based and not an imaginary disorder.

A new study published in the American Academy of Neurology finds RLS could increase a persons risk of heart disease.

People with restless legs syndrome (RLS), especially the elderly, may be at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease...

The study found blood pressure rates during periodic leg movements rose by an average of 20 points for the systolic reading, which is the top or first number, and by an average of 11 points for the diastolic reading, which is the bottom or second number.

In addition, the study found blood pressure changes increased the most with age and those with a longer history of the disease.

For people with RLS that are looking for Online support...I found the RLS Discussion Board, and the RLS Foundation also has an Online Community that may be helpful.

Are you a BlogHer that suffers with Restless Leg Syndrome? How does this disease effect your daily life? Are you having any luck with medications to help RLS? Also, if you blog about RLS please leave a link in comments. Thanks.
