CNN/YouTube Debate - Reactions From the Web
by lauriewrites

Morra asked me to keep up with some of the Web chatter as the CNN/YouTube debate progresses, and I'm happy to oblige. Turns out that I'll be doing this the new-fashioned way - Web only - since I can't figure out the cable in my new house and CNN is nowhere to be found. The wireless is cooperating, however, so for the next two hours I'll be her online partner, keeping up with what folks are saying around the Internet.

If you're somewhere where you have an Internet connection but no cable, like I am, you can watch a live stream from CNN.com. I had to download an extra plug-in for my Mac, but it worked quickly with the wireless in my house.

Here is the YouTube coverage, with videos of the questions as they were asked. There is a button on each post for viewers to post their own responses to the questions. And here's the CNN Political Ticker, that has live updates throughout the debate.

Mother Jones's MoJoBlog is also liveblogging the debate. So is the Washington Post.

On Newsbusters.org, where the tagline is "exposing and combating liberal media bias," blogger Ken Shepherd is following the action.

CNN invites citizen journalists to report their own debate reactions here, saying "You be the political analyst."

Here's one blog post from Dandelion Salad on Dennis Kucinich's "text for peace" initiative. As Denise noted, text the word "peace" to 73223.

The debate has The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth drawing conclusions between current politics and Harry Potter themes.

The Red State Update guys are from LA, not Tennessee. Thanks, Victoria!

Amber Jo's watching and blogging on Myspace.

Here's a response from Lucia Zephyr's LiveJournal:

Goddamn. Anderson Hays Cooper, you snarky bastard.

Kucinich, about the layout of the stage: I notice that CNN put no one to the left of me.
Anderson: I think it'd be impossible to find anybody.

Also, Clinton wins for the whole Make A YouTube-Style Video contest. Very awesome and she was the only one to get the point.

That was the best debate ever. YouTube and CNN need to work together more often. Very awesome.

Though if Kucinich mentions that text message thing one more time, I'm gonna find him, take his cell phone, and smash it with a hammer right in front of him.

Postscript:

I'm finding some other great coverage now that the main event is over. I expect that analysis will be ongoing this evening, so feel free to share anything you find in the comments.

Pam Spaulding at Pam's House Blend is hosting an open thread for reactions to the debate.

John Edwards's held a post-debate webcast,

and Politics TV has the videos of all questions listed here.

My response

So far after the first break I am angry and near tears. more later.

Another break

Is it just me or are Edwards and Hillary actually saying they agree on many issues?

My anger and wanting to cry earlier was due to hearing so many minority issues. I was brought up with the knowledge we are all equal and it hurts me greatly to hear so many issues brought up about past minority issues that are apparently very present and persistant right now, tonight. I realize now more than ever not everyone was brought up to forgive and see all as equals.

knowledge vs actions

I think everyone in this country was raised to believe this, it's just not always something Americans carry out in their daily lives.

It is sad.

That's an interesting take

Momma. You write:

Did you think the debate had a strong focus on minority issues, stronger than usual debates? Do women's issues count as minority issues?

Other issues?

Many stated their consern for oil, the right house hold lights and solar but no mention of the hundreds of Hydrolic plants which do supply power in many states across the US. Many are in need of upgradges but that is not discussed here as an alternative power since most are concentrated on transporation.

Hillary (because I cannot stand to call her Clinton) said something that made me think very ill of her regarding her role as President. How can she regal as President when she put down so many women who had already served in combat in the miliary. I was present when an email from her reached a fellow woman employee who had served two years in the war (2006). My fellow employee was outraged by Hillary's comments in the email as I would guess many of the women who have already served our country in battle would be. My co-worker was not a nurse but a soldier on the fronts making her own efforts to insure our safety. She was all woman and just had her first child a year after serving her commitment to our country.

Hillary's comment also made me think of the way I have been personally treated as a professional in the US and respected by officials of other countries. They have shown great respect towards me as a professional in my own country (US). Always stating in their correspondance I was doing all an employe could do. Great praise for a woman indeed, coming from clients who were against women in the work force as I was, cooperating with our government dispite their believes but would not allow their own female family members the same privilages while in the US.

In light of what is going on in the world today I do not see that Hillary Clinton knows this side of business is going on. If she does then maybe she is not willing to acknowlege it. Maybe it is not be the right time for a woman president with the Iraq war and so many other countries who are not up to par with us in equal rights for women. They speak high prise of us as individuals/ leaders in our own country but would not say to there co-workers/governments abroad that we were infact women of knowledge. They would scoff at us if anyone asked if the work/opinon came from a woman.

What comment are you talking about?

Because I didn't hear Hillary make any comment about women in the military that I would find offensive.

Morra,

Yes, women are a minority but not discussed as much in the light of minority tonight as I would have thought. Mostly the issues regarding women were directed as an after thought in regard to other minority issues.

Hillary Women in Combat email

Morra,

It was an email which I thought might have posted to all military women in the NY Times last summer. I saw the email from Hilary's head quarters which my co-worker responed to very curtiously but firmly her believe in what she stood for and her actions in combat. The email from Hilary was berating if you read it from the side of a woman who had given her all to her miltary career. I am sorry I cannot disclose the email. I can tell you my co-worker did reply to Hilary's email and in person a few weeks later at a local function in a very peaceful setting for both.
