The big news this morning is the cease fire called by the Basque separatists. In case you're unclear on the reality of ETA, there's a short post here by a woman who lost her father to an ETA attack in 1985.
Samizdata posts short and cynical commentary on the ceasefire:
"The ceasefire will come into effect on Friday, the statement said."
Why the delay, precisely? Are they planning on blowing some people up tomorrow for old times' sake? Do they have some semtex that they haven't used that they don't want to waste? Enquiring minds do want to know.
Slublog is more optimistic.
The Basque region within Spain is already semi-autonomous, and ending violent protest is a good way to stop giving the Spanish government just cause for poking their nose in Basque affairs.
There's another hopeful post here in Angela's Archival Project.
But it is really good news to know that they are willing to lay down their arms and massage the wheels of politics in a more civilized and terror-free manner to attempt to do so.
For qood measure, here a few Basque resources. Here's the site for Imagine the Basques, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Basque identity. Here's The Little Prince in Basque, if you want to see what the langauge looks like. The Wikipedia entry on Basque Country is here. And this is an old post, but here are the Basque Bloggers.
Pam blogs from Austria at Nerd's Eye View. She ate in a Basque restaurant, once.
