There are times in every parent's life when the pride you have in your child overwhelms you. At that moment you no longer wonder if you are a good parent; you know you are.

Squid had just such a moment at a recent Parent-Teacher conference for her second grade daughter, Iz. On Flickr, Squid writes:

My daughter's teacher asked her 2nd graders to write an I Have a Dream essay in honor of MLK Jr. My seven year old wrote that she wished gay marriage was legal. This may very well be my proudest moment as a parent.

Here's the picture Iz drew to illustrate her dream.

Squid, whatever you're doing, it's right.

...my home state, where I am very proud to say that gay marriage IS legal. I took my kids and my mother to Cambridge City Hall the day it was legalized, and we had a fine time applauding the happy couples streaming out of City Hall.

Doesn't it warm your heart?

There was a time when I believed my parenting was sound, but the last few years leave me rather questioning. Yet I think back to a conversation with my then 10 year old in 2002, where she was asking on a friend. It was bed time and she was being tucked in.

"Is she married?"

No.

"Does she have a boyfriend?"

No. K, do all girls have boyfriends?

"No"

Do all boys have girlfriends?

"no"

Do some girls have girlfriends?

"Yes"

**** has a girlfriend.

"What's her name?"

I tell her.

"Ooh! That is a pretty name! Can I talk to her?"

Of course. And damn but she did too. One time when my friend called to clue me in on the results of her surgery, K grabbed the phone and talked for a half hour.

Kids have a clean slate, with no prejudices. We muddy that water, not they.

That is absolutely fantastic. Congratulations on successfully teaching your daughter about tolerance and acceptance. More parents should follow your lead.
