Norwegian singer Deeyah has been facing death threats from extremist factions of the Muslim community for months. Labeled the "Muslim Madonna", Deeyah and her explicit music video have, over the last few months, gained international exposure and yes, more hate and threats from portions of the Muslim community.
Being a 20-something pop star isn't easy for a Muslim, but Deeyah's music concentrates on empowerment, women's rights and the beauty of women, all while hammering out poppy, catchy and completely danceable beats.
She writes her music and creates her own lyrical content, which automatically distinguishes her from your average female pop star. Beyond that, Deeyah reigns as one of the world's gutsiest gals, invoking sexual imagery in her videos knowing full-well the ramifications. She's not just talking about freeing herself, she's showing everyone else how.
Heidi from Euphoric Reality notes:
Now, seriously, this babe has got to have some serious fatwahs coming her way. She's got more courage in her pinky than ALL of Europe's and America's editors, with their faux "horror" over those lame cartoons, put together. n the video, some of the lyrics are directed to religious zealots and it asks "What are doing watching this video?" Good point.
Preach it, Heidi.

I suppose pulling publicity
Umm Zaid March 28, 2006 - 11:09amI suppose pulling publicity stunts does take a lot of "courage." Especially when one puts all of one's eggs in the "Hating Mozlems" basket. But she's getting what every aspiring superstar wants -- tons of exposure, and lots of copy. All you have to do these days is claim a "faht-wah" has been issued against you, or that you've received death threats (from Mozlems only, please), and then sit back and watch your star rise. B/C, yes, us Mozlems are predictable. So are others. So are others.
