Yes, You can blog on BlogHer - and it just got easier
by Denise

A couple of days ago, I was on the phone with a long time BlogHer member and she didn't know that she could post a blog entry on BlogHer. This morning, I opened up my inbox and found two emails from people who wanted to know how they could promote their work on BlogHer. The short answer, "Blog on BlogHer." Their response, "I can do that?"

Yes. Yes you can. And, blogging on BlogHer just got easier for those of you who don't write your own HTML.

Log into BlogHer and click "create content," the purple button in the top right corner of the site. On the next page, click "Blog Entry" to get to the page where you can create your post. Once you're there, you'll see fields where you can write a really great title, select a topic or two that your blog post is related to. These topics "file" your post so that people interested in the same subject can find it in BlogHer's topics and search engine. Don't worry if you want to be a bit more specific than the topics list allows, just scroll down a bit and enter a few more free tags. That way, if we only have "Food & Drink" as a topic but you want to enter "gluten-free" you can.

The last step is to enter the actual post - this is the good part: As of today, you'll not only see an empty text field called "body" where you enter your post - you'll also see helpful buttons to help you. These buttons are part of our brand new WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. This type of editor is also called a "rich text editor" and it will allow you to add rich text elements to your blog post without having to write your own HTML code.

With these buttons, you can create bold text, italicized text, underlined text, strike out text, blockquoted text and lists. You'll also be able to create linked text, insert images (that are already uploaded to the internet) and easily insert youtube video.

Here are some important things to know about BlogHer's rich text editor:

When you're inserting youtube video using the rich text editor, just insert the url of the youtube page. Don't insert the "embed code" that is often provided by youtube. You'll also need to click "input format" underneath the content box and select "full html".

If you want to insert video from another service, you'll have to click "disable rich text editor" and paste the embed code from the service. Click "input format" and select "full html".

The clipboard icon will open a pop-up clipboard type box that will allow you to paste plain text into your post.

The icon all of the way on the right, with the two boxes, allows you to determine where the teaser break will be. You should be aware that the center advertisement block on BlogHer posts may occasionally over-ride your "break".

And, if you attempt to put more than a couple of paragraphs in the teaser you'll probably come back later to find that I've moved the teaser to shorten your post. The front page is only ((((this long)))) and we need to make sure others have the opportunity to have their posts appear on the landing page of the "all posts" tab, too. Be considerate of your sister BlogHers, please.

When you add an image to your post, you'll enter the url of the image where it lives on another site. If you have an image on flickr, the url will look something like this: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/182/470531828_8378adb675.jpg
but not this:
http://flickr.com/photos/flamingohouse/470531828/in/set-72157600116512761/

You'll be able to select the size you'd like it to be - the default size of the image will appear in the height/width boxes. Don't try to enlarge it, if anything, you'll want to reduce it so that it formats nicely on the page.

You can also select where you want the image to appear - left/right/center etc...

If you'd rather not use the rich text editor because you're copying and pasting full code from another editor or you're writing your own html, please click "disable rich text editor". Enter your post with full code and then click "input format" and select "full html".

These WYSIWYG (rich text editor) tips will also work for comments you leave on BlogHer, in the forums and in your profiles. The WYSIWYG is everywhere you want to be.

If you have more questions about creating blog posts on BlogHer, I'm here for you. Just post them in the comments so that others can learn from your questions. Or, if you're shy, drop me an email: denise@blogher.com

HOORAY for WYSIWYG!

Thanks for the WYSI editor!  No more cutting and pasting that HTML code for links!

BUT, can you tell me how to make the RSS feeds to our external blogs work? It seems like mine worked for a while, and then stopped.....  eekgads?

I knew you'd be the first, Alyssa

Let me take a peek at your RSS feed and see what's going on. I'll email you about it.

RSS feeds

Actually, now that Alyssa mentions it, my RSS feed never worked...

While it is very cool that we now have WYS-whatever, I have to say that I am sort of relieved that it wasn't there when I started writing here. It forced me to learn a bit of HTML, and now I am very proud of my limited skills! Regardless, I wholeheartedly support any tools that will make it easier for people to contribute to BlogHer.

My thoughts, too Suzanne

You should be proud of the skills you've acquired, they'll serve you well.  I promise.

About your RSS problem - blogspot blogs run Atom feeds and right now the profile won't pull in Atom.  Working on it...

Thanks for investigating

I have a feedburner feed, though, and it still is not working.

Sweet!

It took me ages to figure out that i could blog here.  Now I just have to be brave enough to do it...

Bravery not required

Believe me if bravery was required to blog here, I probably never would have given it a shot in the first place.

Go on, give it a try, I promise I'll read your post.

Exciting!

Ohh and there's a button for lists. Yay lists! ;)

Uh oh

Lists? What kind of lists? ((Yelling, Julie, can we remove the list button before sassymonkey lures me into buying books that I am not allowed to buy before I move to Chicago????))

This is Good

Just 2 days ago, I was at a website that set me off and I thought, "agh! How frustrating, I should blog about this for Blogher.  I wonder how I could submit an entry..." Now I know.

Thanks!

Do people actually read posts that are not
written by editors?

Not trying to come across as negative or anything - just curious to know if you happen to have any statistics.

I do plan on blogging here at some point, but I would feel better if I knew people were reading it.

Vered DeLeeuw

www.momgrind.com

Absolutely!

As an editor, I read member posts all the time, and sometimes link to them. Member posts have ended up in the headlines as well. Looking forward to reading you on the site.

Kim

Yep, we definitely read them

And they're often posted in the headlines on the home page and on the topic pages.

Look at the home page headlines block now - a bunch of member blog posts are featured there.  Lisa chose some good ones to feature today.

Not only do I read them

But some of the non-editor posts have been my favourite BlogHer posts.

Thanks for mentioning it here and jogging my memory.

4 down 1 to go

I promise to update my blog once I get back. I have some great pictures and stories (some that probably will have to wait to be told). We have one more year and then back to the good ol' U S of A. Unless the Democrats lose..... I would rather be homeless than endure 4 more years of Republican rule....

Apparently I can't

Help Denise... What did I do wrong?

Jen...re youtube

From the instructions in the post:

When you're inserting youtube video using the rich text editor, just
insert the url of the youtube page. Don't insert the "embed code" that
is often provided by youtube. You'll also need to click "input format"
underneath the content box and select "full html".

You forgot the last step which is to click input format and select full html

Thanks

Found it. On Safari that section is partially hidden. I fixed it.

Thanks!

Great Addition

Just tried out the new wysiwyg functionality, it is a good addition and seems to work smoothly. Thanks for adding this.  Often on other sites these type of editors are clunky and lock up - the one you have chosen is very smooth.

I am making some videos to post to youtube and look forward to including them in posts here.

clunky indeed

This one's working pretty smoothly so far.  A few clunks when moving from one type of editor to another but most people don't do that anyway.  ;-)

Thanks for your comment, I look forward to watching those videos.

I hadn't a clue

I even asked on Facebook BlogHer group how to make BlogHer work for me and got not a single answer.

http://www.judithgreenwood.com/thinkonit/

Ack! I'm sorry

I try to check into the Facebook group once a week but I sometimes get so busy and distracted that I forget!  I'll do better.  Adding it to my outlook calendar to remind me to go every single day.  (I have the same problem w/Linked In but have finally gotten into the habit of going there on M/W/F.)

Thanks for the Facebook nudge.

Automatically post external blog to BlogHer?

How do I do this? I heard a rumor one could, but I can't figure it. I use wordpress.org.

No you can't

We do not  have functionality that allows automatic cross-postings on BlogHer.

If you want to blog on BlogHer, you have to write and submit each post.

Please feel free to send anyone who is confused by this or thinks it is possible directly to me for assistance.  denise @ blogher . com :-)

How do you find your entry once you make it?

I've made an entry, you replied, I went back six weeks later give or take and replied because I found it again and now I can't find it again. It's probably very easy to find your blog entry on here, I just can't remember how. *Sigh* Not easy being me.

But it's so easy to be your long time friend

Hah.  I love ya, Em!

First, if you are looking for your old posts, you can find them by clicking into your profile (when you're logged in, click the "my profile" button in the top right corner of BlogHer - it's a purple button.)

Then click "edit my profile" in the top right corner of your profile page.

Click the "track" tab.

Click "track posts" and you'll see every post you've made or commented on.  The ones that have your member name as "author" are the ones you've created.

Also, you can find your blog posts on your BlogHer blog page with this formula: http://www.blogher.com/blog/membername

So yours, my friend Em, is http://www.blogher.com/blog/emsxiety

You can also subscribe to that feed in a feedreader (because you surely have a feedreader) like this: http://www.blogher.com/blog/emsxiety/feed

Where Did SpellCheck Go?

Irony being the fickle bitch that she is, I am a prolific writer who can't type.  Ridiculously dependant on Spell Check. And this new text editor doesn't seem to have spell check any more. Is that a sign that I just need to learn to type once and for all, or is there a magic button that I am missing? Please say there's a magic button, I do so like the magic buttons.

Ha. No.

I tend to just rely on the built in spell check on Firefox and rarely use special spellcheck tools so, errr, I never thought about it.

I'll see what we can do, Alyssa.
