I honestly don't know how she does it. The inimitable Elise Bauer, whom you may already know as the doyenne of foodie bloggers and educatrix of the Moveable Type masses, has opened a Web design contest with some friends. You're looking at two of the judges, Kathy Scoleri and Joelle Reeder of the amazing Moxie Design Studios.
Why a contest? Because, as the contest site and Bauer like to say, "Design Matters." Look around this network and its blogrolls. We bloggers may type or record what we like, but the visual filters we put forth set the stage for our words. You doubt me? Then check out Ninjapoodles, A Woman of Many Parts and Spot On. (These blogs are among the reasons I've been chatting with Elise recently about the design of this site-- the BlogHer Beta Site -- and planning a new design initiative that I'll blog later this week.)
The Style Contest is one offshoot of Elise's demands of blog design. Since last summer, Elise and her 16-year-old tech colleague Arvind Satyanarayan have been working with this crew to develop this competition. Their goal is to recognize the very best Typepad, Movable Type or LiveJournal blog designer in each of these categories:
- Entertainment and Media
- Hobbies and Crafts
- Home and Family
- New, Politics and Current Events
- Sports and Recreation
- Technology
- The Kitchen Sink (everything that falls outside of the previous six categories)
As in all things, Elise and team don't mess around. The category prizes are a nice, round $1,000 -- and the grand prize winner takes home $4,000. To contend, you must read the Contest Rules. The site also recommends you login to Submit a style and make sure your submission is structured properly. Entries must be submitted by 15 May, 2006, 10:00 pm PST. Winners will be announced on June 2, 2006.
