The other day I googled "lesbian blogs" using google blog search, just to see what I might find. The first real link I found, that wasn't porn, was a post called 6 Degrees of Separation, on a blog called Bears Mountain. I started chuckling by the second line of the post when she said
I did an experiment this afternoon.
I googled "lesbian blogs", thinking I would come out with some weird search results. Let's just say I was amazed. -OC, Bears Mountain
I thought, funny, that's how I got to you. Then I read further, finding myself smirking and nodding my head in total agreement.
I googled "lesbian blogs". I came up with all sort's of strange results, many being porn sites. But, there were a few I clicked on, and they were really nice blogs.
I started clicking around on their blog rolls, and guess what happened? I found my way back home, to this community. It took many click's, and the randomness of it was what took me by surprise.
Click after click, I hit new blogs I had never heard of, then BAM...all the sudden, there was Lori's blog on someones blog roll. I'm on her blog roll, so it was like coming full circle. -OC, Bears Mountain
As I was reading this post, on a blog I had never heard of and had found by googling "lesbian blogs", I thought, this is so true. I've noticed this exact same thing. Then I clicked on the comments, and I saw comments by several bloggers who I read and who's blog rolls I'm in. So I checked her blog roll. Sure enough, there were two bloggers who's blog rolls I knew I was in, Suburban Lesbian and Just Eat Your Cupcake, giving me 2 degrees of separation from Bears Mountain.
It really struck me as oddly coincidental. I mean, how weird that I would find a post about 6 degrees of separation within the sphere of lesbian bloggers, on a random blog I'd not ever heard of, and then be link back to myself through several people in her blog roll. I've always been intrigued by the notion of 6 degrees of separation, and I would think that the internet connecting people from around globe must be narrowing the number of degrees.
We all know it's a small world: Any one of us is only about six acquaintances away from anyone else. Even in the vast confusion of the World Wide Web, on the average, one page is only about 16 to 20 clicks away from any other. But how, without being able to see the whole map, can we get a message to a person who is only "six degrees of separation" away? -How does 'six degrees of separation' work? from Cornell University, Computer Science
Being the inquisitive type of person that I am, I decided I needed to try this a few times to determine the average number of degrees of separation I am from other lesbian bloggers. Since I don't have a program that will crawl the blog rolls of all lesbian bloggers and build a data base for me, I'll have click my way through and see what I come up with. I'll get my starting blogs by googling "lesbian blogs" since that's what started this whole thing to begin with, and pick ones I've not heard of, or maybe have heard of them but that I don't read. Then I'll look through their blog rolls or list of links to see if there is anyone I know in them, if not I'll just pick one that seems interesting and keep working my way through until I get to someone who has me on their blog roll. It's not all that scientific, but I think it will be fun. And, it will expose me to a lot of new blogs.
Attempt 1: 2 degrees of separation. I started with Your Daily Lesbian Moment, which led me to slogreenx, which led me back to me (gaymo).
Attempt 2: 3 degrees of separation. I started with wAitiNG foR doROthY, then went to Hahn at Home, which led me to Drowning Pisces, Recovering Straight Girl, and a few others who don't have blog rolls but who all lead back to me.
Attempt 3: 3 degrees of separation. I started with Miss Averice speaks her mind, then went Terroni because I knew she would link me to Just Eat Your Cupcake, who goes back to me.
Attempt 4: 2 degrees of separation. I decided to change things up here and go with the lesbian lifestyles 2006 blog of the year, Ham & Cheese on Wry for my starting blog. Which led me to Let's Kill Saturday Night, who led back to me.
Attempt 5: 2 degrees of separation. I started with the lesbian lifestyles 2007 blog of year winner, Dorothy Surrenders. She links to The Lesbian Question, which goes back to me.
I won't even really draw a conclusion here because my experiment really was more about fun than actual science. I'm sure I could find blogs that would take me forever, or maybe never, to link back to me, but I might find some great blogs along the way. I also think the degrees of separation between lesbian bloggers is probably less than for straight blogger, only because there are so many fewer bloggers who are lesbians. But you just never know.
So what about you? How many degrees of separation do you think you are from other bloggers?
Try starting with one of the bloggers I've linked to in this post. If you want to start with a non lesbian blogger, you could try starting with Nucking Futs, Random and Odd, Puck U & the Skates You Came In On, or so the fish said.

Alas, I am beyond six degrees
I am not a lesbian blogger so I'm not on many dyke blogrolls. I might get lucky if someone has "nuthinfancy" linked in her blogroll, then I could get back to my blog.
Now about this Six Degrees thing - It's a problem. When I was looking at lesbian bloggers, to try and find an editor for BlogHer.... you all link to each other!! I'd find like one "new to me" blog on each lesbian blog. It was time consuming and fun at the same time.

OK I tried it...
I started with Waiting for Dorothy because she's at the bottom of my feedreader and happened to be the last blog with a new feed - six clicks and I couldn't get back to myself. Weird, I thought I would find Suburban Lesbian faster... but I didn't. Very odd.
I started at your blog, gaymo - and knew I could get to mine quickly - gaymo to Suburban Lesbian to Carolina on My Mind (my old old old friend nuthinfancy) to me.
That's probably as good as I'm every going to get, from lesbian blog rolls and I can live with that. :-)

Well if you started at me,
Well if you started at me, you could get directly back to yourself because you are in my blogroll. Unless something strange has happened, that is.
The hard thing about the degrees of separtation and finding your way home is, that unless someone spells it out, you don't always know who if the blog is written by a lesbian. And, if other bloggers are like me, not all of the blogs in there blog roll are strickly lesbian blogs. I've got straight women, straight men, and lesbians in my blog roll.
What is sort of interesting to me are the blog circles, and where the overlaps are, and more specifically, where they aren't. I've been tempted to map it and try to figure out what common denominators are, but I think that would be a long involved process. It would be cool though to compile blog rolls, like a who reads who, and build a data base that might be able to recommend new blogs based on the blogs that you like. If only I had more time and database building skill.
Uh wow, I had no idea
I errr didn't see myself on your blog list, probably because I didn't look for my name. Hah. I feel like a lesbian blogger now. Weird how that happens.
That not knowing who is a lesbian and how isn't - that's a big one. I appreciate people who sort their rolls by orientation but I cannot imagine ever doing that myself. So, it's often very hit and miss (mostly miss) when I surf blogs starting at queer sites.
I think you should build that tool - if twitter can have a tool that searches your friends list and then recommends friends, we should have the same thing for blogs. Oh yea, you need more time and more practice with databases. Don't we all? Blah. Who can we hire? I'd throw in money. lol

Cool!
You know, I don't think I've ever been a token non-lesbian before. I feel like I've arrived.
A token non-lesbian
Hah. I have sometimes enjoyed being the token lesbian but it is quite a huge responsibility and I end up resenting it.
I hope you'll say something if you begin to resent being the token non-lesbian. Hah.

I have every confidence that
I have every confidence that you will do well to represent.
Lost in the ether
I tried the six degrees of seperation lesbian blogger experiment and after much more than six degrees, I am still out there trying to find my way back home.
Dancing About Architecture - Blogging just got queerer.
R2D2 Projector - I need this
I'm not a Star Wars fan, I've slept through them more than I've seen them. But, I bonded over them with a 13 year old... so this, I need.
Awesome.
Nice to meet you - are you on a lot of Australian lesbian blog lists? Maybe the six degrees doesn't work as well - trans-Atlantic style?

Aussie Lesbian Blogosphere
I am a fairly new blogger - just got serious about it about 6 months ago. Therefore I am still stumbling around the blogosphere trying to find my place in it and find out who else is inhabiting it.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a single Aussie lesbian blogger. I have no idea where they are hiding. They must be out there somewhere. Obviously, they all have elite ninja skills.
On a different note, how could you sleep through Star Wars?? At least the loud sound effects should have been enough to keep you awake. :)
Dancing About Architecture - Blogging just got queerer.
I have seen some Australian lesbians
I'll see if I can find some links for you later today.
I know what it's like to think you're all alone out there. :-)

Well, I know The Food
Well, I know The Food Pornographer is a lesbian, and she lives in Perth. Her blog is really a food blog, but she also talks about her life and her partner. You might try contacting her to see if she has some blogs she could recomend if you're looking for Astrailian lesbian bloggers that is.
Six Degrees of Separation
As the Lori mentioned above who has OC on my blogroll, along with Suburban Lesbian, Just Eat Your Cupcake, and a myriad others, I wrote about this phenomenon a couple years ago I think. I actually drew out a chart of some of the blogs on my roll and how they interconnected, much like Alice's Chart. Even straight people were interconnected to me through other lesbian blogs. It's kind of funny in a ha-ha way when you stop to think about it - it's kind of like being in the one girl bar in town on Friday night when the same butts sit on the same barstools. Still, this blogging thing is far healthier and much more interesting.
