OK BlogHers I'm looking for ideas.

We've got this awesome Blog in a Box two-and-a-half hour workshop first thing on Day One.

We're not just covering the tech stuff, but also (thanks to Melinda Casino) something I find every beginning blogger wishes they knew more about: how to blog without making an ass of yourself.

But let's face it: I need to find me some newbies.

Because I know a lot of people who are bloggers. I read a lot of bloggers and vice versa. I think a large percentage of the readers and members here already blog.

I need to let all the blog-curious folks out there know that BlogHer will provide them with a gentle introduction to the blog world (before overwhelming them with more possibilities than they can fathom.)

So, I'm looking for suggestions: Yahoo Groups, Tribes, mailing lists etc. etc. etc. and connections into such groups.

Some ideas I've already got:

The writergrrls Yahoo Group
The SF Women on the Web Yahoo Group
The AWP

Lay it on me BlogHers...where are the huddled masses yearning to blog free?

In my experience the leading women's business org's are not yet that dialed in to blogging. I think contacting these groups, who themselves have large memberships, might be helpful. Our company is a Chapter Sponsor for NAWBO (Nat'l Assoc of Women Business Owners) in New Mexico so I will post information in the discussion forum and contact the board. I will also ask them to move the info up the chain to the national office, however a direct contact from Blogher would be good too I think.

I'll do the same for WIC in New Mexico, and will contact the IABC ( http://www.iabchawaii.com/ ) (Int'l Association of Business Communicators) here in Honolulu.

Yes, I agree. The actual sessions description does say "beginning or prospective blogger", so absolutely I think people who are blogging but quite new to it will get a lot out f it. I didn't really even start to try html-stuff for a long time after I initially got a blog up. Really, it's quite simple to do, but it's the fear factor that keeps some of us who don't consider ourselves very techie from being more bold.

I've been thinking about this a lot. I think that maybe it's not just for bloggers who have never blogged, but maybe bloggers who don't like their current platform and want to hear/learn about other options. I get a lot of emails from people who don't like what they're using and would like suggestions on other options. I think if we open it to people who want to START a blog as well as people who are NEW to blogging and my want to hear about other options...there would be a lot more.

Does that make sense? Defining a newbie as a non-blogger AND a beginning-not-quite-found-their-niche blogger. hehe.

Hi Shaunna:

All you need to do to participate is come to the conference! I'm talking about the fact that we have a session first thing on Day One geared towards people like you, and I want to make sure the word gets out that even people who aren't blogging will be able to come and get a LOT out of BlogHer.

So please do register for the conference ( http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaid=103657 ) and take the Blog in a Box session...we'll look forward to welcoming you to the blogging cult this July :)

I have a circle of women I'm collaborating with around some change methodology work and each of them has found themselves called to be technology stewards for their community. BLogging is part of that. 3 of them have already signed up for Blogher and I think will be in this workshop. Think of social change orgs. Get the word out on NetSquared via Marnie, et, al.

I passed along your request to Will Richardson at Weblogg-ed ( http://weblogg-ed.com/ ), and James Farmer at Edublogs ( http://www.edublogs.org/ ). That taps into the teacher universe.

In this particular case I want to reach people who would be served by a 2.5 hour workshop that teaches blogging basics. This is the session description:

Blog in a Box:All the basics for the beginning or prospective blogger. By the end of the session each attendee will have a blog with RSS feeds, a blog roll, and know how to add links/photos to their blog. Basic html will be covered. Miss Zoot and Heathervescent are on hand to walk you through. Plus Melinda Casino will cover basic good blog manners: disclosure, attribution, non-spammy commenting and trackbacks.

So, yes, I think some people who already have a blog but aren't doing much with it would get a lot from the session, but mostly people who aren't blogging at all because they're apprehensive about the technical aspects of it.

Thanks for asking.

Hmm, what do you exactly mean with newbie? I have been blogging in three years, but not that long in English. As a blogger in English I am a newbie, and as a member in BlogHer I am a newbie.

How about SeniorNet ( http://www.snlcsj.org ) in San Jose.

"SeniorNet's mission is to provide older adults education for and access to computer technology to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom. SeniorNet, a non-profit organization, teaches adults (age 50 plus) how to use computers and the Internet at over 240 Learning Centers nationwide."

Then try the San Jose State Journalism/media department...
