Healing at Home: Salves

This guide is the first in a series exploring home remedies.

Recently I heard a chef that makes artisinal candy (including coffee marshmallows!) comment that "everything old is new again" and I couldn't agree more. There really is no substitute for a quality handmade item. The comfort in the knowledge that what you hold in your hand — whether it be a marshmallow that takes you back to childhood campfires or something you've made to heal yourself or someone else — was made with love. I'll be exploring some home remedies in the next few posts, starting with salves.

Herbs 411 - The Herbal Hotline has the method for preparing salves and gives us a recipe for Belly Butter, which she says during pregnancy kept her from itching and possibly from getting stretch marks.

Speaking of babies, frugal baby tips has an herbal diaper salve recipe as does Much More Than A Mom, who posts her recipe for Herbal Baby Balm which she created out of a desire to avoid certain ingredients found in store-bought products.

Dubious Wonder has a recipe that she used on her children who had sensitive skin and eczema. Apparently, it's quite tasty, too, since a dog ate a bunch of it!

Finally, Herb A Day has some history for us as she profiles the plantain, used in Anglo-Saxon medicine in a "salve for flying venom" and more recently in a famous salve for treating burns.

Go forth and heal thyself!

I totally agree!

I couldn't agree with you more! I don't personally make the healthy bath and body products I sell, but I know that more and more people are becoming interested in buying more natural products for the same things you listed above. People are starting to realize all the garbage that is put into products sold out there on the shelves.

Great post!

Saving the moisturized-impaired one shea butter at a time.
