Contributing Editor Elana Centor also blogs at FunnyBusiness
Every day, Emily Chang spends a couple of hours reviewing, playing, testing with the newest web 2.0 applications.
She then lists her finds on her blog--eHub
In just one day last fall over 30 new apps came across her desktop.
eHub was created to drive business to Emily's San Francisco web design and consultancy business,Ideacodes, that she owns with partner, Max Kiesler. Emily says the blog constitutes 99% of their marketing effort. The other 1% is word -of-mouth.
Many of their new clients are application designers who have taken their application to the point where they need UI design, and says Emily, "venture capitalists who want to know what the scene is all about."
So what will you find when you visit ehub? The newest of new, the trendiest of trendy web applications. You'll also find interviews with the creators of these applications who all answer the same email interview questions.
A couple of weeks ago (time matters in web 2.0) Emily featured an interview with Kevin Burton, creator of TailRank-- an application whose largest audience is in Europe.
a memetracker which reads blogs "so you don't have to." Essentially we find the hottest news stories among the top 50k blogs and present them in an easy to use interface.
The interview covers the motivation behind the application but it also gives users a look at how different product development cycles occur in web 2.0
eHub: What is your design philosophy?
TailRank: Release early release often. I'm a poor designer but I find that the feedback from our user community has been invaluable. We try to listen to our customers as much as possible and push about two releases of TailRank a week.
While Emily doesn't list 30 new applications each day, chances are she'll list several. As to the latest crop that came across her desk this week, Emily found one quite ironic. It's called Shiny Letter
It's a web application to make it easier for people to send "postal" letters. As their website says
"
We all love getting letters in the mail, surprise someone with a letter today.
The concept: You create a postal letter on your desk top and then Shiny Letter will mail it for you.(they have mail drops around the world)
ShinyLetter is a very simple service, we have taken a low tech task & put it online, hopefully making your life easier & Grandmothers around the World happier :) Our service allows you to write a postal letter to anyone in the World, we then print out your letter, slip it in an envelope, address it, stamp it & mail it using the postal system. We mail from several locations around the World.
The cost of the convenience of not putting the leter in the envelope, licking it shut, attaching the stam, and leaving it for the USPS to pick it up and deliver ? $2.00 for a 4 page letter.
