The Hunt For A Great Summer Haircut - Hair Extensions?

Elizabeth Thompson also blogs at The Imperfect Parent.

Most recognized for her look (and often cloned coif) "The Rachel" - Jennifer Aniston recently
admitted in an interview with Harper's Bazaar she had to get hair extensions two years ago after ruining her hair by cutting it "herself."

Holy dreadlocks and hang onto your ponytails, BlogHers!

So -- let me see if I...you know...get it -- even superstars have bad hair days (like me) and have resorted to "cutting their own hair" (like me, again) resulting in nothing less than a hair disaster (yep, that's me all over!)

"I wanted a different look, so I cut my hair. Obviously, I wasn't thinking clearly. So I decided to have extensions, never knowing that you end up with 400 things in your head that cause your hair to break off. Nothing destroys your hair faster than extensions. It's taken a year and a half to get my hair grown out."

Well, can you blame her?

Didn't it seem like everyone and their Friendsexual brother was getting "The Rachel" haircut in the 90s?

According to a poll taken on Beautiful Hairstyles, 48.10% of the 501 women responded "YES" to getting Jennifer's...I mean, Rachel's...DOH!..."the look" and then were asked to rate it...with 43.71% giving "The Rachel" 5 stars!

I dunno.

Although it's not quite "The Rachel", yesterday my ten-year-old daughter got one of the best haircuts, ever (and donated 10 inches to The Locks of Love) and since I've been growing mine out (for the first time in years) and haven't gotten a haircut (beyond my bangs trimmed) since last November...GULP!...perhaps it's time for me to get my own "new look" - though I'm lucky if I have even an inch to spear.

Um...okay -- so, since extensions may not be the way to go -- like...where do I start?

Natalie Aranda of eMaxHealth gave some pretty good tips on choosing your hairstyle according to your face, shape and personality:

Women have the desire to have their hair looking gorgeous each and every day and that is why female consumers spend billions of dollars each year buying hairstyling products. When you begin to search for that perfect long hairstyles, medium hairstyles or short hairstyles that will compliment your features you will first have to decide what shape your face is, the type of hair you now have, and of course your own unique personality.

Sounds easy enough, yes?

Before searching for that perfect long hairstyle, medium hairstyle or short hairstyle that will compliment your features you will first have to decide what shape your face is, the type of hair you now have, and of course your own unique personality. If you only go by the shape of your face and ignore your own personality then you may not be very happy with the outcome.

Okay, now she lost me somewhere around, "deciding what shape your face is, etc..."

But -- according to another Jennifer -- deciding a look is the least of my worries. It seems there's yet another stumbling block to finding the perfect haircut.

Her hairstylist - he who runs with scissors - apparently talks alot, too.

You see, I've got one of those diva hairdressers. You know the kind I'm talking about. He talks too much and is more self-involved than anyone else on the planet. He is so self-involved that he gloats in his self-involvement. He gives fantastic cuts, but they are always the cuts he has in mind. Not what you were thinking, or hoping for. So going to him is like playing the lottery. Either he picks your number or you're left holding a dud ticket. Oh, come on, you totally know the kind I am talking about.

Ayup...though my hairdressers have been (for the most part) women...but, like I said, I'm ready for a change.

Hmmm, I wonder if any other bloggers are on the hunt (like me) or found a great summer hairstyle, recently?

I could go blonde -- like Tali did -- but, since my hair is very dark (and I believe I remember it being that way, naturally) it may be too much of a change. And I'm too busy lovin' those glasses...where'd ya' buy 'em from, Tali?

I could go with a funky look -- like Linda gave herself -- but, dayum...if she would look good...wearing just about anything.

These bloggers look hot!

Me?

Not so much.

But, I do like wearing bangs and love the razored look that Linda has - which happens to be very hot, right now.

Speaking of hot - what are

And you look awesome, Debra! I had a similar cut and -- since you've mentioned in your post about a light summer haircut that won't get into your eyes -- you'll understand when I shout, "Must keep all scissors away from me!"

I don't know -- if my hair ain't looking happy, then I ain't happy -- I have another two weeks to go (according to my new and improved hair stylist) before I can get "the look" I want.

And with me scheduled to go camping with my ten-year-old's girl scout troop next weekend -- it doesn't look good.

Looks like I'll be heading back, sooner than my hairdresser would like, and going into summer...shorter than I thought.

But, HEY!, it's my hair...dammit...and I'm so looking like Nicolette Larson blinking with her danged bangs sticking to her eyelashes -- pre-Desperate Housewives -- and way back in her Knots Landing days.

Quick...someone hand me a flipping scissor...would ya!

I blogged about this last month. ( http://astitchintime.blogspot.com/2006/04/i-have-a... ) Tried one of those online style selectors, found several "suitable" styles and got my hair chopped.

By the date of that post, it's about time to head back.
