Ypulse's Anastasia Goodstein attended the What Teens Want Conference in NYC and posted that teens want:

  • To create an identity
  • To connect with others
  • Want to change the world
  • Want to be older than they are
  • Want to have fun
  • Want to do this now

She elaborated by providing some outcomes in terms of some social media trends...

Mobile Lifestyle: I can personally attest to the differences between generations as it relates to mobile. My two teenage sons text, they don't talk. I talk, I don't text. All I can say is that I am just glad that at least they are reading something. Anastasia says that the stat that created the most buzz at the conference was that 15% of Virgin Mobile users admitted breaking up with their boyfriends/girlfriends with a text message.

Teens love their phones and would give up all before their phones. She notes,

"And "pimping the phone" is a big part of why they love them:

  • 42% have downloaded ringtones and ringback tones
  • 30% have downloaded graphic
  • The number of users that downloaded a ringtone in the last month is 28%, way up from 17% in 2005
  • Negative opinions about ads on cell phones are loosening: 58% don’t want them vs. 71% last year

User Generated Content: The biggest buzz word going she notes. Who can disagree?

Social Networking: Tagged.com participated in a panel discussion and noted that they have 3MM registered users, or 10% of the US teen population. Of course, since MySpace is now according to Hitwise the number one web destination, these numbers are small; its good to hear about something else though.

Also noteworthy, 44% of teens have different friends online than off. As a parent, I am concerned with that. As a blogger, I may be setting a bad example.

YPulse is an awesome site." Anastasia says it provides daily news & commentary about Generation Y for media and marketing professionals." Ands it does a great job at that. I also read it to try and stay a few steps ahead of my kids. They would never agree that I do. I also put a link on the 7th grade blog that I wrote for the 7th grade parents at my son's school. I think all parents should read YPulse!

I think the same blog directed at parents would be just fine!

Thanks so much for the complement Marianne. I wish I could have been at What Teens Want but my very cool contributing editor Chet Gulland actually covered the event for Ypulse.

I'm glad you're sharing the link with parents. I am trying to figure out how to broaden the appeal -- whether it's the same blog just also marketed to parents or a different blog. Unfortunately with my job at Current TV, I don't know that I have time to do another blog :) Either way, I will be promoting my first book, which is definitely for parents, called Totally Wired (subtitle tk), all about how teens are using technology to do all the things teens do, just "totally wired." It comes out this February, and I will have a small book site to support it...Maybe that's the way to get parents hooked into the "Pulse."
