The Quirky & The Kitsch of Tourism
By Jules on July 17, 2006
On the weekend, I was visiting some friends who had recently come back from a holiday to Western Australia. They drove the entire way - from the east coast of Australia, to the west coast. Kind of like driving from New York City to Los Angeles, but with a whole lot of nothing in between.
Aside from hearing about all the natural wonders they saw, what we found most amusing to hear about were the quirky tourist attractions along the way. Like the Tin Horse Highway in Western Australia.
Well, no-one can say we lack imagination in Kulin!
Months before the annual Kulin Bush Races, workshops are noisy not with the sound of farm machinery but with the construction of tin horses!
As October looms, one by one, new tin horses appear in the pasture and stubble paddocks lining the road now known as the "Tin Horse Highway" on the way to the Jilakin Race Track. Horses are made from all sorts of materials, striking all manner of poses.
We seem to have a fascination in Australia with creating new tourist attractions, not content with mother nature providing awe-inspiring monuments, we create Big Things. The Big Pineapple. The Big Banana. The Big Merino Sheep.
Miss Knit is a Canadian in Australia, and blogged about her experience at the Big Pineapple.
Kiskil reminisced about visiting the Big Merino as a child.
Aakanksha blogged about her experiences with the Big Mango on a road trip she did, along with photos of some other remarkable tourist sites!
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Australia cannot be the only country in the world to have the quirky & kitsch tourist attractions. What have you seen on your travels?
