BlogHer Keynote Discussion: What's Next on Day One
by Elisa Camahort

22nd in our series introducing you to each of our BlogHer Conference '06 sessions and their speakers, and finding out what you would like to get from each session. Today, I bring you from Day One:

What's Next?: What's next in tech? Is "Web 2.0" hype? Or hip? And what's next once you grab your brass ring?

Marnie Webb is joined by Caterina Fake and Meg Hourihan, two leaders who can certainly speak to both questions!

[img_assist|fid=992|thumb=1|alt=Meg Hourihan] Have you heard the one about the English major who became a hard-core techie, author, speaker, entrepreneur and inventor of one of the most widely used blogging tools around, gobbled up by a huge web destination company, and then went off to pursue those famous "other interests", most notably food...about which she is passionate. Of course she can wax just as poetic about the product they really thought they were working on at Pyra Labs that never made it, while that simple extension (a little tool we now call Blogger) exploded. And exactly how many people do you know who've been profiled in The New Yorker, not just once, but twice?

[img_assist|fid=988|thumb=1|alt=Caterina Fake] How about the one about the other English major who ended up in design and interface, eventually becoming the co-founder of one of the most successful Web/Community-based companies and who, after said community-based company was also gobbled up (by the number one web destination in the world) then became a big wig at said huge company...all while somehow making sure her community-based site kept its credibility and retained its sense of community? And did you know that that product (you know, Flickr) was also just a secondary feature never intended to be the main output of her company either?

[img_assist|fid=862|thumb=1|alt=Marnie Webb] Well, if you didn't know some of that, but find it as intriguing as I do, then here's the place to line up your questions for these titans of tech, Caterina Fake and Meg Hourihan...and let our trusty moderator Marnie Webb get as many of them answered as we can. Do you want to hear about how they went from English majors (and in at least one case bohemian socialistic tendencies) to Silicon Valley entrepreneurism? Do you want to know how they managed to adjust as they discovered that their company wasn't going to focus on what they had started out focusing on? Do you want to know what they think is next for technology? For the web? Do you want to know their vision about what these technologies can do to help change the world? Do you want to know whether this is really a bubble...or the next bomb? What they think it takes to make sure your company is part of the bubble and not a bomb? Do you want to ask Meg about "the intersection of food and technology"?

So, tell us what you think. What do you want to learn? What do you want to hear? What do you never want to hear again? You're having Caterina and Meg over to lunch. What's on the menu?

building scale

I incepted and co-founded Minti - an global parent-to-parent advice-opedia and social community for parents with US$1.19m in funding. We have lots of activity and around 1000 members since beta launch in March and after getting the technology to the point were we are now happy to building scale. I would love to obviously learn how flickr increased memberships numbers, referrals.

Takeaways from the session

OK, I meant for this to be a live blog post...but I just got to cleaning up the notes into some sensible essay. See Caterina Fake and Meg Hourihan Share Flickr, Blogger Lore for more details on the session.
